Or maybe just mentals. We thought this might be a nice comeback win. Then came the ugliness. A base-running gaffe. Three errors and a walked-in run in the 10th. Can't anyone here—besides our fearless Captain—play this game?
This much we know: It's awfully hard to win if you can't catch the ball. And as Joe Sheehan has pointed out on Baseball Prospectus (and thanks to Bronx Banter for the tip), the Yankee defenders have made outs on less than 66 percent of the balls their opponents have put into play—a rate of patheticness unprecedented in the last twenty years. Given the fact that Yankee pitchers, with the exception of the Unit, can't strike anyone out, this is one very big problem. Will Mike Cameron, the Mets spare Gold Glove centerfielder, end up on the Yanks? We wouldn't be surprised. But how it'll happen, we have no idea.

And in that 10th inning meltdown, the big blow was a defensive miscue by the usually sure-handed Tino. Man, it boggles me how poorly we're playing. Not only have the wheels come off, but the axel's on the road about mile back and the engine just caught fire.

I didn't think this year's team would be as good as previous teams (though they had the chance at it), but I know they're not as bad as they've been playing.

What Captain? Crunch? Steubing? Morgan? Does that team in the Bronx even have a Captain? It's hard to tell at this point.
