Our Bombers got a fine start from the irrascible Unit last night, god bless him, an 8 inning, 2 hit, 10 k performance that brought his record to a respectable 11-6 with a 3.96 era. Is the Unit back to form? Is it that the Twinkies can't hit? We'll hope for the former, and be encouraged that with him and Moose apparently throwing well, the Yanks have a nice 1-2 punch at the front of the rotation. The problem is what comes next. Which is anyone's guess. The NYT reports the Yanks are looking to sign the released DRay "Hideki" Nomo and his 97.43 era to replace Doans Poster Boy Kevin Brown. Or maybe he's replacing Pavano, whose rehab has been pushed back. At any rate, Aaron Small is back in the rotation, which, given his outing in Texas, may not be such a bad thing.
Meanwhile, we extend our best wishes to Matt Clement. We wish him a speedy recovery. When the Sox go down, we'd like them to do so without excuses. As it is, we note that the Yanks, Sox, and A's are tied at 45 in the loss column.

The Giambino (finally), Robby Cano (what a pleasant surprise!), Captain Jeter, A-Rod, Matsui, Sheff, Jorgie, Moose, Sturzie, Flash and Mo—those are players who can win a World Series. Bernie, Ruben, Flaherty and even Tino will do their part. Bubba will be good enough, and might surprise you: little, little-known players have frequently come through in the postseason.
That leaves the rest of the starting pitching and the middle relief. Is Johnson finally the pitcher he has been for the last ten years? Is the Torre theory on everyone -- it takes time to adjust to New York -- correct?
Some combination of Pavano, Wright, Leiter, Brown, Small, Wang and now Nomo should be able to fill 3 slots that pitch well enough to give this team a very good record, but so far they haven't. The middle relief is a mystery.
Cashman is a magician if he can make better offers for A.J. Burnett than the White Sox, Orioles or Red Sox, and after his experience with fellow Marlin Pavano (and fellow NLer Vasquez), he might not want Burnett. Does anyone want Womack and Cabrera in a package?
Over the long run, you can't win without pitching.

Brad - I think what John is saying is that the Yankees have a core of players that are capable, but not the staff to supplement those guys. He's mostly right (though what it is about "Sturtzie" that makes him think of championship rings is beyond me), but it's not like the team can go out and get the two additional starters needed to round out the staff without some cost (Cano?).
