What!? You mean we have to discuss the Sox game in the same stinkin' playpen as these schlumps dressed in stormtrooper outfits, representin' the Evil Empire?
Posted by: Hudson | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:02 PM
The shamefest is on! Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the 3rd are the Sox.
Posted by: Devine | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:16 PM
Globe reports that Lester has a hurt back, will miss a start and head back to Boston for examination.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:19 PM
Two on, two out for Cora. And he k's. Gah.
Posted by: Laura | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:44 PM
This game is dreadful.
Posted by: I'm Bill McNeal | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:45 PM
We just got a run. Not really sure how. I think it was an error on the first baseman. Not positive.
Posted by: Laura | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:46 PM
Hinske scored, Pedroia got caught in a rundown between second and third.
Posted by: Laura | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:47 PM
ya, how sad is it that in the 5th inning your player of the game is either a pitcher whos thrown 81 pitches through 4 or a 2B whos 0-1 but has seen a lot of pitches to run up the other guys count.
Posted by: TJ | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:47 PM
Yeah, I was right. It was inning by Broussard.
Posted by: Laura | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:49 PM
Is there a WNBA game on?
Posted by: I'm Bill McNeal | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:49 PM
Make that error, not inning.
Posted by: Laura | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:49 PM
A run on no hits...beautiful...
Posted by: Devine | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:50 PM
Who is first out of the Sox bullpen?
Posted by: I'm Bill McNeal | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:50 PM
CWS 6, Minn 1, F
Posted by: I'm Bill McNeal | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:53 PM
Man, didn't I say earlier that you can't count on the back half of the Angels' bullpen? Well, I was half right: Gregg was a fine stopper. JC Romero: sux0rs. Game now over.
Posted by: IvanX (AF) | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:53 PM
Anybody read Shaughnessy's dreck today?
Posted by: I'm Bill McNeal | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:55 PM
Shit.
Posted by: Laura | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:56 PM
Tavares up.
Posted by: I'm Bill McNeal | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:56 PM
Look at the bright side: At least Tavares didn't give up the slam.
Posted by: I'm Bill McNeal | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:58 PM
Royals double-agent Snyder trying to give the lead back ASAP.
Posted by: Hudson | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 05:58 PM
Yeah, and now Tavarez will come in and give up a two-runner to the first batter he faces.
Posted by: Laura | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:00 PM
They's loaded again!!
Posted by: Devine | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:05 PM
Aw jeez. How stupid.
Posted by: Laura | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:06 PM
What happens to Lopez when Tek comes back.
Does he get released or shot?
Posted by: I'm Bill McNeal | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:09 PM
he'll remain the rosters expand to 40 in a few days.
Posted by: TJ | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:11 PM
Remember when the Red Sox were in first place?
That was cool.
Posted by: I'm Bill McNeal | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:12 PM
yea, being ahead of the Yankees is always great. But as painful as this is, it would have been more painful if Lester and Hansen had HOF careers elsewhere.
And if this keeps up through September? The Patriots have looked GREAT so we have something to look forward to this fall.
Posted by: TJ | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:14 PM
God i Love that big Ox.
Posted by: TJ | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:18 PM
Hey look, David Ortiz hit another home run! At the very least, we're very lucky to get to watch him play everyday.
Posted by: Laura | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:19 PM
Papi will break Roger Maris' non-steroid enhanced homerun record.
Posted by: TJ | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:19 PM
To any Yanks fans still out there, sorry about the lack of a game thread today. I was called away for an immediate, unavoidable work obligation and just got back in front of the computer. Must say I'm not disappointed with the results, considering the last three games I have watched turned out rather dismally.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:19 PM
TJ: and many people, myself included, will consider him the rightful heir to the record.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:20 PM
Lowell with a homer. Now 6-3
Posted by: Laura | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:21 PM
Give Lowell some love.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:21 PM
Poor fielding gives the Yankees 4 outs in the top of the eighth.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:22 PM
I was doing a Chris Farley Show bit, TJ.
This sh!t today, and for the last 2 weeks (Papi excluded) is nothing but laughable.
Posted by: I'm Bill McNeal | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:22 PM
I think most fans outside of Chicago, St Louis and San Francisco would consider it too. Though this is turning into 1998 too with a battle going between Ortiz and Howard.
Posted by: TJ | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:22 PM
AG, I think you're it for NYY.
Posted by: I'm Bill McNeal | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:23 PM
Cano takes advantage of the miscue and singles to right to make it 1st and 3rd, two away, top eight.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:23 PM
Could be, Bill. Bernie grounds out 6-3 to end the NY 8th. It's 11-4, EE.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:25 PM
Pedroia hasn't been bad, hes been getting a lot of pitches, the hits will come with more regularity. Aside from him and Ortiz the only other bright spots this month would be David Wells and the Gulf Coast League Red Sox winning the championship. lol Oh and Josh Papelbon has been great at Lowell with some of the other 06 draft picks.
Posted by: TJ | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:25 PM
Howard's a monster, and his best is yet to come.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:26 PM
Farns in for NY.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:27 PM
Kyle walks Rivera on four pitches.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:28 PM
As everyone else has been saying...
Ladies and gentlemen, your reason to watch the 2006 Boston Red Sox, David Ortiz.
(Apologies to Papelbon, Manny, and Schilling.)
Posted by: Devine | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:30 PM
Farnseseses' 7th straight ball makes it 3-0 to Kendrick. He's taking on the pitch to make it 3-1. Then a straight fastball for a full count. The payoff: fouled back right. The next pitch is fastball in the dirt. Guidry gets on the phone to get someone up.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:31 PM
Tavarez misses away to walk Ibanez. Sexson up with one out.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:32 PM
Tavarez gets Sexson to foul off a few to make it 0-2.
Then he hits him.
Farns is at 1-2 to Kennedy.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:34 PM
Kennedy hits a hard shot misplayed by Green to score a run and make it 1st and 3rd. Probably should be E-4, but the home-town scorer may rule it was hit too hard.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:36 PM
Kendrick is a player. He's gonna be good.
Posted by: I'm Bill McNeal | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:37 PM
It's ruled a single. Napoli up.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:37 PM
Line drive DP to short ends the jam and the sixth.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:39 PM
Bill: Agreed. I haven't seen a whole lot of him, but what I have seen is pretty impressive.
Farns loads them with no outs. Looks like Mo is coming on for a six-out non-save situation.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:40 PM
Correction, that wasn't a line drive; it was a grounder mixed up with a brain-fart on a hit-run.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:41 PM
Broussard has to come off the bag to make the catch on a wide throw by Bettancourt; he barely tags Pedroia on the bum, who was coming in ala Rose, to make the out. Nice work by Sexson there. Bettancourt-Broussard-Boston's Bum.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:44 PM
Nick Green utterly blows a grounder at second that should have been an easy DP. Awful.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:44 PM
oOooOoOO getting dicey in Anaheim
Posted by: TJ | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:45 PM
Grounder up third is fielded by ARod; Napoli is ruled out of the basepath dodging the tag for the first out. Scioscia argues briefly, but it was pretty obvious. Melky is coming on to the field to replace Bernie in the middle of the inning. What's up there? Bernie jogged back in.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:48 PM
Cabrera falls behind 1-2: he Ks and is really mad about the 1-1 called strike i think.
Vlad up.
Manny Del Carmen on for the Sox.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:51 PM
Delcarmen is brying gas. Holy effing Hinske!
Hinske makes a _phenomenal_ grab on a hard shot to right.
GREAT play!
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:53 PM
Mo gets Vlad to ground out on the FC, Izturis out at second to end the inning.
That Hinske play is one of the better grabs I have seen recently. Flat out sprint towards the line, full extension to glove the liner by Rivera which was easily a double, maybe more.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:55 PM
Craig Wilson is 0-4 with three strikeouts, and looks determined to make it four, falling behind 0-2 swinging at junk up and out. He finally takes a pitch. The 1-2 is brings the K. Blech. Way underneath.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:56 PM
Giambi is pinching for Green. Takes strike one, which I guess was a strike, but looked high. He fouls off the next pitch, then takes the 0-2 inside. The stache is approaching Stadler-esque proportions, but the hit is a weakflare to short. Jason looks a lot slower running with all that facial hair. Slow motion makes him looks like a bull walrus coming up to speed on an iceberg.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 06:59 PM
Is anyone else still here? Can't believe I wasted that line on an empty room.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:00 PM
I'm here kind of, ag. That was a most excellent line.
Posted by: Laura | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:03 PM
Rivera is out on the mound to finish out the game, facing Anderson. Garret lines out to Wilson for the first out. Rivera facing Rivera. Rivera throws a fastball, taken by Rivera for strike one. The next pitch is a fastball in. The 1-1 is on the middle-outside for a strike. Great pitch. Rivera climbs the ladder; Rivera started to go but holds off for ball two. Mo blows Juan away on the 2-2 for the K. Two away.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:05 PM
Damn. Rivera is on my fantasy team.
Posted by: Laura | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:05 PM
Thanks, Laura. :)
Mo hits Kendrick, who takes second on indifference. Kennedy hits a quail just over the head of Cano to score Kendrick.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:08 PM
Sorry about the fantasy situation, L. I thought Torre said Mo wouldn't work more than one inning from here out. I guess he means "starting with the next time."
Kennedy takes second on indifference. It's full to Napoli, who K's to end the game.
Putz on for Seattle in the top of nine.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:09 PM
The shadow in Safeco is BRUTAL right now.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:10 PM
It's okay, my fantasy team is floundering anyway. I've got no shot at the championship. I've had so many injuries that we were done almost from the start.
Posted by: Laura | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:11 PM
Putz is facing Pedroia. Putz is ahead 1-2. He misses just outside to make it 2-2. The shadow is four feet in front of the plate, and it's a really harsh sun today in the Pac NW. The 2-2 is fouled back and left. Pedroia fouls another one off.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:12 PM
Yeah, the sun at SAFECO has been terrible all day. Lots of loveliness in the outfield.
Posted by: Laura | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:12 PM
Another 2-2 Putz brings a heater on the high away corner; Pedroia is underneath it for the K and two away.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:13 PM
Well, this weekend sucked.
Posted by: Laura | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:15 PM
im in the top 4 of all 4 of my fantasy leagues. Cano's 4-5 day helps one of my teams.
Posted by: TJ | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:15 PM
The shadow has moved out to about six feet in front of the plate. Lopez is at 1-1. He takes high and chin to make it 2-1. The next pitch is a fastball tight fouled back to make it deuces. Putz gets Pedroia swinging on a sun-assisted fastball at the letters and on the outside corner to end the game.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:16 PM
Lopez has 6 Ks his last 2 games.
Posted by: I'm Bill McNeal | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:17 PM
Yanks back up to 6.5 games ahead.
You know what to do, start counting!
Posted by: Yo | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:19 PM
Jeter took the team on his shoulders today with his two home runs; Bernie and Robi were awesome at the plate as well. ARod got a single and scored a run, which is promising, but struck out three times, which is depressing.
Congratulations to Karstens on his first major-league victory.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:20 PM
Heres a bright spot: Red Sox losing all three games in the series means we will not see this headline in the morning papers:
Sweepless in Seattle.
Instead you got to see it from me.
Posted by: I'm Bill McNeal | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:21 PM
Two hits by the Boston lineup, albeit dingers, against four Seattle pitchers is absolutely depressing.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:23 PM
Red Sox magic number: 911
Posted by: I'm Bill McNeal | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:24 PM
Bill: Theo was going to dial it, but he heard if he waited until after the deadline the rates would drop.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:27 PM
To be fair to Bernie, it really was the elder statesman that took the team on his shoulders today.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 07:32 PM
That's the end of the div race, no?
Posted by: Sam | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 08:21 PM
Uh, Sam, where have you been? The race has been over since even before the Sox got swept by the Yankees.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 08:45 PM
Well, um, lessee, the Sox could take four games from the Yankees in their next series, and, uhhhhhh........ aw heck, forget it.
Season ovah.
Posted by: Hudson | Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 09:42 PM
Apologies for not being around today -- although I can't say I'm sorry, per se. Thunderstorms kept me offline most of the day...
Posted by: Paul SF | Monday, August 28, 2006 at 12:04 AM
SF - you're right, but I was still to afraid to say it before yesterday. But as Paul's latest posting makes clear, I think being swept by Seattle pretty much ends it.
Not trying to rub it in, either.
