I don't know about lonely nations, but it does seem that the Yankees are wondering what's the deal with Bernie, who hasn't shown up to camp nor offered any official statement as to when or if he might arrive, despite the pleadings of Joe Torre and various teammates. Retired? Not retired? The saga continues, for at least a few more hours.

Wait, Bernie's not under contract: he said he would not accept a minor league deal. So why is he expected to show up at camp?

The Yankees regretfully say the best they can do is offer Bernie a non-guaranteed job.
Bernie thinks he'd like to play but under the circumstances it's probably time to retire.
No one's happy about it.
