Day Thread

Three items of note:

1. Hideki Okajima is now tied with Jonathan Papelbon and Tony Fossas for the second-longest scoreless-game streak in Red Sox history, with 18. Ugueth Urbina has 20.
2. Through 40 games, the 2002 Red Sox started one game better, at 29-11. They had a two-game lead on the Yankees, then went 64-58 the rest of the way while the Yanks went 74-43. If the 2007 Sox and Yanks mirror their 2002 counterparts, the Sox will lose the division by three games. On the flip side, this is tied for the Sox' third-best start through the first quarter of the season, behind 1946 and 2002. The only other time in history the Red Sox had a .700 winning percentage after 40 games? 1904. In 1904 and 1946, of course, the Sox won the AL pennant.
3. Jason Giambi is now, officially, an admitted steroid user. Or, more accurately, an admitted "stuff" user. That makes two MVP awards that I think should be handed to the second-place finishers. That would be Frank Thomas for Giambi's 2000 award, and Mike Greenwell for Jose Canseco's 1988 trophy.

I apologize for the seeming inactivity of the last week or so. You'd think with five of us, we'd always have someone posting. But we've somehow entered a stretch where all five have been incredibly busy. Plus, it's a bit more difficult to maintain the enrgy of a rivalry-centered blog when one side of the rivalry is in the toilet. The same thing happened last fall, as well.

So, if no one else posts today, consider this your daylong thread to palaver about these topics or any others going on in Yankee and Red Sox nations.

Regarding Item 1:

To quote Mark Twain (perhaps apocryphally) "There are lies, damned lies, and statistics." Any record that is held by Ugie can't be worth a lot.

2) It's always good to keep in perspective that this is May, after all. I'll be comfortable with a 9.5 game lead when there's 8 games left in the season. That said, I don't see this Yankee team going at a .650+ clip, not with their age and injury problems and their pitching issues.

3) Until all the evidence is out about that era, we can't start re-assigning awards now (who knows how clean Frank Thomas was?). And as a Red Sox fan, I'd rather chew my own arm off than see Mike Greenwell get awarded an MVP.

One thing I read in an article about the Giambi quote, that really kills me, is that he and other players claimed that it was not against the rules of baseball to take them, until 2002. There are two problems with this argument

1. Fay Vincent banned all illegal substances (including, specifically, steroids) in a memo sent to all the teams in 1991.

2. It was against FEDERAL LAW even before the Vincent memo.

I think Giambi should be applauded not penalized for his candor on the subject of Steroids. He is the only current player, coach, owner, comish, etc who has spoken openly and freely about his use. His admissions help the game move on from this subject.
Who knows what the other MVPs and Cy Youngs did during their best years to enhance performance. The reason we know so much about Giambi's use are both because of what he has told us and because he happened to get his steroids from a place that was investigated by the Feds. Bad luck for him. There are so many other players on every team who were surely users trying to go back and rewrite history is pointless. Lets move forward not backwards...

Vic, Steroids etc may have been illegal in name but in practice they were not. There was no testing and no attention spent on the subject by MLB as they were enjoying the ratings spike the juicers provided with their exciting (to some) brand of baseball. I think laying the blame on the players alone is not right. Everyone in baseball has a stake in this mess.

What candor is that, Sam? He hasn't even used the word "steroids" in public unless compelled by grand jury subpoena. His "candor" was prompted by being forced to testify before a grand jury, then having those transcripts leaked to the press. After everyone finds out what you did and when, it's real easy to apologize without saying what for.

Granted, he gets some props for apologizing (even if it was in that ridiculous CYA way) and for seeming to regret his past actions -- if indeed they are past actions -- but I don't think he's deserving of applause.

And I agree we can't know who took steroids and when, and that it's impossible tor eassign records and awards willy-nilly, but if the guy admits he cheated to get the numbers that got him the award in that particular season, I don't see a problem with pulling an Olympics and giving the medal, so to speak, to the second-place finisher. Greenwell was one of my favorite players growing up, so it'd be cool to see him get the award.

That grand jury testimony doesn't get leaked and I promise you HGHiambi doesn't say a word.

Also, I hate when Bonds apologists use greenies as a way to justify steroid use and HGH use. Greenies were basically 5 cups of strong coffee, not something that made little men HUGE.

Paul I totally agree that Jason was forced into the situation by his grand jury testimony and would never have said a word about it otherwise. That said, compare how he has handled the situation he was placed in with others who were accused/implicated in steroid use and I think that candor is appropriate term. There are legal reasons for him not to use the word "steroids" in his comments.

I still disgaree with pulling his MVP award for multiple reasons. First, as you yourself said his admissions are not complete admissions. While I dont doubt his use, this is one of the reasons he cant speak fully about the subject. We dont talk about taking Bond's MVPs from him while he was basically in the same situation as Giambi. Second, pulling awards etc from players discourages an open discourse about the subject. Third, we have no idea what the #2 guy did or didnt do to put up the numbers that garnered him those votes. (see the 2001 AL MVP voting for examples of this - not that ichiro took PEDs but if you stripped number 1 here could you give it to Giambi or Bret Boone who finished 2/3?) Finally, there is no way to comprehensively go back and say who took what when. Juan Gone the two years he won, Tejada in '03, maybe even Mo Vaughn in '95. I just dont see the point of stripping an award even if it would go to one of your favorite players. ;)

I agree with this point you made, Sam: Second, pulling awards etc from players discourages an open discourse about the subject. That's probably the best argument against pulling awards/reqwriting records I've heard. Still, it's not like we really have an open discourse now. It's basically Jose Canseco, Curt Schilling and Barry Bonds screaming at each other. Not exactly productive.

I also agree that Giambi has handled this situation far classier than anyone else. But considering the decidedly unclassy nature of the sitation, that's not really saying much.

Sam - I didn't mean for my comments to be taken to solely blame the players, although they are ones who actually purchased and used the PEDs. I think both sides are complicit, but I would come down harder on the players who actually took them

I know the owners knew, and the owners probably benefitted from ratings increases and more fans at the parks, due to the inflated offensive numbers. It is also true that there is little the owners COULD have done, since the union continuously blocked any form of testing in the CBAs of the time. And, they are not federal law enforement officials

Did the owners turn a blind eye either by CBA enforced strictures, or greed? Probably. Did some of players take substances that were a federal offense to possess? Yes.

Like I said initially, I just hate the lame attemtps to justify it as OK.

turns my stomach a bit to hear people say giambi has been classy in his endeavors. the bottom line is, he's chosen his words with caution to perserve his contract. did we all forget how the yankees were trying to void his contact by any measure possible? money made him cheat. money made him lie. money made him appolgize. it's a shame because jason seems like one of the nicer guys money can buy.

Give Giambi some credit. At least he admitted his usage. Baseball must stop censoring this steroid issue. After all, censorship is becoming America's favorite past-time. The US gov't (and their corporate friends), already detain protesters, ban books like "America Deceived" from Amazon and Wikipedia, shut down Imus and fire 21-year tenured, BYU physics professor Steven Jones because he proved explosives, thermite in particular, took down the WTC buildings. Giambi is right, baseball should follow his example and admit its own wrongdoing.
