After a late-night flight out to Oaktown, the Sox have to pick their weary bones up and get ready to play after a long trip west. No better way to do this than to check the AL's recent weekly and monthly honors, and see that Dustin Pedroia has been named both Rookie of the Month (for May) and PotW for his recent heroics. Pedroia has exceeded expectations, not unlike the team itself, who have surged to the best record in the AL despite inconsistency from Daisuke Matsuzaka, a DL stint for their ace, Tim Wakefield throwing batting practice during real games for about a month, extended slumps from Manny Ramirez, Julio Lugo, Coco Crisp, and JD Drew, and a nagging injury to David Ortiz (who has gone homerless for roughly 70 at-bats). Oakland isn't much of a cure for this, though; the foul territory is voluminous and Danny Haren excels at home, with a 1.70 ERA and four wins. He's on a six game winning streak, and tonight is going to be a tough one. Julian Tavarez has surprised us before, so we'll keep our chin up, for at least a little while.
Use this as your thread for tonight's action.

Red Sox
1. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
2. Alex Cora, SS
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Manny Ramirez, LF
5. Kevin Youkilis, 3B
6. J.D. Drew, RF
7. Coco Crisp, CF
8. Doug Mirabelli, C
9. Eric Hinske, 1B
SP - Julian Tavarez
A's
1. Shannon Stewart, LF
2. Travis Buck, RF
3. Nick Swisher, 1B
4. Dan Johnson, DH
5. Eric Chavez, 3B
6. Bobby Crosby, SS
7. Mark Kotsay, CF
8. Mark Ellis, 2B
9. Jason Kendall, C
SP - Dan Haren

Wow, that's a white flag lineup if I ever saw one. Cora, Hinske, Mirabelli. Yuck.
No need to stay up tonight, maybe I will wake up and be pleasantly surprised, such is baseball. But I wouldn't be placing any bets tonight on the Sox, that's for sure.
Posted by: SF | Monday, June 04, 2007 at 08:21 PM
Hmm. Pedroia batting leadoff. Curious.
Posted by: Rain SF | Monday, June 04, 2007 at 09:17 PM
Why is Mirabelli playing? Is something wrong with Tek?
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Monday, June 04, 2007 at 10:11 PM
At last! Papi hits a tater!!

Jesus Christ, Danny Haren on Gameday looks like...Jesus Christ. :P

Sox with some hard hit balls off Haren...
Any fellow west coasters here?

WMP... ouch
Posted by: mp | Monday, June 04, 2007 at 10:50 PM
mp, I'm in your time zone.... just a tad busy with work... and this game is a little depressing
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Monday, June 04, 2007 at 11:22 PM
Tavarez is awesome. What a great guy. Tries to make DiceK feel at home, good with Lester taking his spot. Love that kook.
Posted by: Soog | Monday, June 04, 2007 at 11:26 PM
Who is WMP trying to make feel comfortable?
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Monday, June 04, 2007 at 11:35 PM
Wow, why have I wasted any opportunity for sleep watching this weak-ass effort?
Thanks, Tito, for the lineup. Thanks, Theo, for sticking us with Tavarez as our fifth starter - there's no excuse for running this guy out one more time, Gabbard can do as sh*tty as Julian, why not give him shot instead of basically conceding a deficit by starting Tavarez? And thanks, again, Theo, for not admitting your mistake with Wily Mo and having him plug up a useful roster spot where we might have someone who can actually make contact and be a useful defensive player. Pena is completely useless, I don't care about his "raw hitting ability" which will never develop on the job, particularly not for a team that he will not get any regular playing time for. He should be sent away, for good.
This game has me completely fed up.
Posted by: SF | Monday, June 04, 2007 at 11:40 PM
Plus, we get Mirabelli again on Wednesday, meaning he will have played 3 of the last 6 games. Great. And if Wake continues to suck, then what use is Mirabelli anyhow?
Posted by: SF | Monday, June 04, 2007 at 11:45 PM
SF - I thought I WAS sleeping. This is a game?

Posted by: sf rod | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 12:56 AM
Pineiro in for TWO INNINGS against the A's?!!! Is there any possible excuse for this? He has a 10+ ERA AGAINST THIS TEAM!!!!
Posted by: mp | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 12:56 AM
God, Pineiro is worse than Vizcaino.
But, I'll say this, at least the Sox, with their record, are able to hide their mistakes.
If Boston pulls out a win here, they are a team of destiny. Or they just built up a lot of good karma from losing so much in past years. Or Oakland is just pathetic.
Ah hell, I have Embree on my fantasy team. Gimme a W here.
Posted by: AndrewYF | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 12:56 AM
can't blame tito. he had no one to go to. all henski. leadoff walks are killers though.
Posted by: sf rod | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 12:58 AM
jc nasty in the dirt to chavez. 1 down. oh how we could use a dp ball.
Posted by: sf rod | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:00 AM

lugo down on three straight pitches with the strike three being two feet outside and in the dirt. tiz comes up with 2 down to new lefty pitcher flores. he's given up no runs in 6 innings. time to give him an era.
Posted by: sf rod | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:17 AM
TJ - You might never get any sleep.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:20 AM

Posted by: TJ | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:20 AM

See, further proof short people shouldn't play baseball. Dustin's poor little legs couldn't run his bum home fast enough. (j/k)
Was that on Dustin or the 3B coach?
Posted by: no sleep til brooklyn SF | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:23 AM
this game is fatiguing my groin. ellis up with a chance for the cycle. again.
Posted by: sf rod | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:24 AM
Cycle for Ellis
Posted by: TJ | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:26 AM
couldn't tell if the 3B coach was stopping him, but the catcher had the ball while dustin was between second and third.
Posted by: sf rod | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:26 AM
okajima stretching. not that i was told from oaklands announcers, but i say him in the background. gotta love stadiums that still have a on field bullpen.
Posted by: sf rod | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:29 AM
one out walk by jc puts runners on first and second. out comes tito, in comes snyder.
Posted by: sf rod | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:32 AM
i say it again. damn how we could use a dp ball here. probably going to the well too many times.
Posted by: sf rod | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:33 AM
Uno mas DP por favor?
Posted by: no sleep til brooklyn SF | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:34 AM

Alright Synder! Holding onto ALL his balls! Yeah!!
Posted by: no sleep til brooklyn SF | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:36 AM
crazy messy play on a grounder to youk at first with snyder covering. after a few tumbles, the out is recorded. beat him by a half step at most. 3 down.
Posted by: sf rod | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:36 AM

thanks tj.
Posted by: sf rod | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:43 AM
do you suppose WMP has another decent at-bat in him tonight?
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:44 AM
coco flys to center. wily mo has the chance to earn a free pass for his next 50 k's....if he hasn't already tonite.
Posted by: sf rod | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:45 AM
or not
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:47 AM
hes a question to ponder.... Would any of you have a problem if Boston went with Youk at third next season had Ortiz play a majority of time at first and Pena DH'd? He has a tremendous bat and if he played everyday he would hit 35+ Homers and with that I would take the excessive Ks that would come with it
Posted by: TJ | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:49 AM
just wonder what it would do to Ortiz to play first every day
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:50 AM
they could always Send Pena to RF once a week and give Ortiz a day at DH.
Posted by: TJ | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:53 AM
i don't like the idea of no lowell. outside of that, i think tiz could handle first everyday. fly out to coco. 1 down.
Posted by: sf rod | Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 01:54 AM
ill. game over. ill.

See what happens when you rant about a player (in my case, WMP)? They go out and make you look like a moron.
I should rant about WMP more often...
