Great post Paul. I didn't have to get much further than "No. 3 starter John Burkett collapsed after the All-Star break" to have my memory totally refreshed. This is what makes me nervous about this season: this team has two pitchers like John Burkett in it's rotation right now. Wakefield, who cumulatively gives you a certain performance but is all over the place, Julian Tavarez, who has overaccomplished (ditto Burkett in that first half). Gabbard is an unknown quantity, we still don't know when Schill is coming back. Burkett was a guy who was far exceeding expectations that first half, and watching him you just KNEW he wasn't that good. I feel the same way about JT, for sure. I think the pitching is the wink link going forward, as odd as that sounds since it has been as consistent as one could ask for. The quietish bats have been hidden by superior starting; as soon as that becomes less superior (and it will without changes, I'd almost be willing to bet on that, if I were a betting man), the bullpen will follow, and the offense (and the team) won't have anywhere to hide.

Agreed, SF. That's why I was so high on the possibility of acquiring Buehrle. With him off the market, I'm no sure who else the Sox could or should go after. I can't say Contreras or Vasquez excite me too much. I doubt the Reds are offering Aaron Harang. Dontrelle Willis would be attractive if the Marlins are finally offering. The Sox could buy fairly low, considering his struggles of late, and he wouldn't be a bad 3/4 starter.

I keenly feel the need for starting pitching, particularly in the wake of Schilling's injury and the fact that he won't be ready until at least Aug. 1. To me, the offense will right itself. Even if Lowell slumps and Youkilis regresses a bit, I think Ortiz and Manny will rebound enough to more than make up for that. You figure Lugo simply has to be better, and if not, Cora at his worst is still better, and Drew has been much better than he's been given credit for and seems to continue to be reviving. The bullpen is contingent on the staters' health. I don't care much for the Lidge rumors because I don't think the Sox need him as much as a starter. Now if the Astros are offering Oswalt again...

This is definitely your area Sox fans but I honestly don't see what you guys are seeing. Now that could be because you obviously see your team more often then I do, but you have to figure the following things will occur in the favor of the Sox in the second half:

Manny's Career #'s .313 .410 .594
Manny's 1st Half #'s .284 .385 .465

Add to that J.D. is below his career #'s and you really have the potential to score a ton of second half runs.

Realistically you only need 3 pitchers for the playoffs and you certainly have that in Beckett, Daisuke and Wakefield even if Schilling comes back and is ineffective. That's without Schilling, Lester or whomever winds up making up the rest of the rotation.

Just my opinion though.

You have to figure Manny has to revert back to normal and in order to do so that's a MONSTER 2nd half.

Papi's 2006 #'s .287 .413 .636
Papi's 1st Half #'s .314 .434 .556

While his avg and OBP are up, his SLG and HR's are down, those things should all even out. Again 41, 47, 54 over the past 3 years, that leaves a ton of HR's to be hit in the 2nd half.

Lugo's 1st Half #'s .197 .270 .298
Lugo's 2006 #'s .278 .341 .421

He many never return to those numbers, but the potential is certainly there. That's a huge differential.

Sorry I had that in order but for some reason it came out all jumbled, I am sure you get the drift anyway.

nice analysis paul...i know you pointed this out, but it's worth repeating: the major difference competitively is the yankee train-wreck this year...i believe the sox can muddle through a so-so second half and still hold off the yankees [and others]...with their pitching, if they can get hot for the playoffs, who knows what might happen...i'm not saying that the yanks have no chance, but i'd say it's slim...what i find odd with history repeating itself with a team's performance is that so often the players and coaches are different, yet the results are the same...wierd
