A full quarter of the Sox' remaining games are against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
Tim Wakefield is 8-0 at Tropicana Field.
The D-Rays have lost five straight to the Yankees and Orioles, seven of their last 10 and 15 of 20. The Red Sox have won six of seven.
The Red Sox have just taken three of four from Cleveland in a potential playoff preview and re-extended their AL East lead to a comfortable 7.5 games.
Things are looking up. Let's hope they stay that way.

No gamer for Yanks-O's? How are we supposed to discuss the disruption of the space-time continuum that the suspended game is causing?
Posted by: yankeemonkey | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 07:11 PM
Oh, man, are people watching the Yanks-O's suspended game? It began at 8-6 in the bottom of the 8th; in the bottom of the ninth, Baltimore has scored 1 run, and with two out has runners at the corners against Rivera.
I doubt they'll pull it off, but it's a lot of fun for a SF anytime Mo is made to sweat.
Posted by: Hudson | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 07:38 PM
Well the Yanks hold on to win the remainder of the suspended game.
Posted by: Rob | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 07:39 PM
Ah well... Rivera gets out #3. But it was fun while it lasted.
Nothing happening at the Trop (0-0 going to the bottom of the 2nd), but the Sox have made the Rays pitcher throw 38 pitches already.

Hammel with 3K's through 2 innings. Isn't this team the Yanks ran the score up on?
Posted by: Rob | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 07:41 PM
I suspect the Sox will get to Hammel soon enough.
Posted by: Hudson | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 07:42 PM
Unfortunately, right now the Rays are getting to Wakes. 1-0, two out, runners at the corners. I thought he was supposed to love this park!
Posted by: Hudson | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 07:48 PM
Wakes is *not* finding the plate.
Posted by: Hudson | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 07:49 PM
Loaded up. Jeepers.
Posted by: Hudson | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 07:50 PM
(Jeepers because it's Crawford.)
Posted by: Hudson | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 07:50 PM
Phew. Crawford decides to swing at the first pitch of a guy who's not throwing strikes, and grounds out.
Posted by: Hudson | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 07:52 PM
Mirabelli, thanks for 2004 but I won't miss you. Siddown and let the real hitters bat.

Since May 15th, Wakefield has posted an ERA of 6.41, with a .864 OPS against.
He was great until then, one of the best in the majors at that point, but he has been, probably, one of the worst in baseball (including an 8-inning gem against the Rockies and a good 6.2-inning outing against Texas) since then.
Would the Sox resign him next year at his usual $4 million and give him a slot in their rotation if he keeps this horrendous streak up?
Posted by: AndrewYF | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 07:57 PM
Well, he took that pitch for decent ride to left-center. To no effect, though.
Posted by: Hudson | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 07:58 PM
Another inning of longish at-bats against Hammel that produces zilch.
Posted by: Hudson | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 07:59 PM
Lugo played with Upton, he knows how fast he is. Why so slow with the throw?
Posted by: no sleep til brooklyn SF | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 08:04 PM
papi breaks up the no hitter with a single through the shift.
Posted by: sf rod | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 08:17 PM
Papi breaks up Hammel's no-hitter, to no effect. 3 out.

Jinx, sf rod
Posted by: Hudson | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 08:20 PM
I think the Sox will keep Wakefield around. At worst he can eat innings in the pen (he's played every role possible there in the past) and fill in if a starter gets injured.
He's 11-9 on the season, so it's way too early to say. Plus if anyone deserves some veteran consideration, it's Tim.

This is shaping up like a bizarroworld version of Sabathia v. Beckett.
Posted by: Hudson | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 08:30 PM
What the F^&^!!! HAMMEL OF THE DEVILRAYS IS PITCHING!!
Posted by: Rob | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 08:31 PM
um.....so yeah.....i'm totally stoaked we get to play the d-rays and o's for the next two entire months but, i would hate to think young pitchers and crappy lineups become our undoing.
get some damn hits or at the least, work a pitch count.
Posted by: sf rod | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 08:33 PM
Six strikeouts for Wakefield, 1 run through five innings... This is now looking like a "quality start," one the Sox are at risk of totally squandering.
Posted by: Hudson | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 08:36 PM
Mirabelli strikes out on three pitches. What a friggin scrub. I am tired of seeing him in the lineup every five days.
Posted by: Rob | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 08:39 PM
Yay! A walk! Progress made.
Posted by: no sleep til brooklyn SF | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 08:40 PM
Cora steals?
Posted by: Rob | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 08:45 PM
Lugo walks

Fossum warming up in the pen.
Posted by: Rob | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 08:49 PM
Holy macaroni!!! Youk homers. It has been what seemed like an eon since he last did that.
Finally 3-1 us.
Posted by: Rob | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 08:50 PM
w00t! All I care about are wins, baby.

Ortiz strikes out on high cheese.
Posted by: Rob | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 08:52 PM
Crisp lines out to end the inning with the bases loaded.
Posted by: Rob | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 09:06 PM
It seems as though I spoke too soon re: Wakefield.
Posted by: AndrewYF | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 09:11 PM
Hey hey, the O's just went up 2-1 on the Yankees.
Posted by: Hudson | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 09:16 PM
Last AB Belli struck out on 3 pitches. So the guy tries to change it up and make an improvement. He does this time and K's on 4 pitches.
Posted by: Rob | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 09:18 PM
3-1 O's
Posted by: Rob | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 09:19 PM
Fossum pitched a quick inning that time.
Posted by: Rob | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 09:21 PM
Delcarmen relieves Wakefield.
Posted by: Rob | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 09:23 PM
Delcarmen with a 7 pitch inning. Awesome.
Posted by: Rob | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 09:26 PM
Another crisp inning for Manny D.
Posted by: pale blue eyes | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 09:26 PM
Manny (Ramirez's) average keeps climbing -- up to .306 now. And to think that just a month ago, a few were acting as if he were entering his twilight years...
Posted by: Hudson | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 09:35 PM
Drew gets it done with a single, bringing home Big Papi... 4-1 Sox. Another insurance run would be nice.
Posted by: Hudson | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 09:37 PM
Lowell *doesn't* get it done, with a pop-out to CF. Coco's turn w/ 2 outs.
Posted by: Hudson | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 09:38 PM
Mirabelli with an RBI?
Posted by: Rob | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 09:41 PM
Coco gets it done (two-bagger) and so does Belli (single). 7-1 Sox.
Okay, I'm starting to de-stress about the Sox having a zillion games against the Rays... Every reliever they've brought in has allowed at least one run.
Posted by: Hudson | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 09:42 PM
I'm not in any way confident about an Oriole lead over anyone, let alone the Yankees, until there's three outs in the top of the ninth.
Posted by: Paul SF | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 09:58 PM
So that's that ... Now let's hope the Orioles can find a way to get the job done. Just like Paul I'm not optimistic though. Well, as long as we keep doing our part ...
Posted by: pale blue eyes | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 10:11 PM
Game
7-1
Posted by: Rob | Friday, July 27, 2007 at 10:13 PM
This is shaping up like a bizarroworld version of Sabathia v. Beckett.
Such a matchup would be bizarro in and of itself, as those two didn't face each other this week anyway. :)
