After Nick Cafardo popped reports that Mike Lowell had received a plethora of dour-year offers, Peter Gammons and the New York Daily News report the Yankees don't have all that much interest in Lowell, either.

That would leave, if my calculations are correct, one team left in the bidding.

It's weird--so far there has been a whole lot of drama and yet nothing has really changed for either the Sox or the Yanks. My guess is that things will change when the Santana negotiations work themselves out--I have a feeling the Yankees will get him but at too high a price (say, Hughes, Joba, Melky, and a prospect). I hope Lowell hurries up and resigns already though (mostly because I think somebody actually will come after him if he waits long enough).

I think there IS another player on the field for Mikey. The Dodgers. It looks liek they are gonna lose out on the Cabrera sweepstakes which means they MUST be looking at Mike.

Also, I wouldnt be surprised if at least one of the teams that claimed to be withdrawing was lying.

Despite the Phillies denials lots of "industry sources" have said they are still very interested. Again, this could all be PR to avoid raising expectations from fans in case they cant pony up the full amount to get him.

Unless the Sox threaten to pull the offer, Lowell has no reason to not just wait and see what happens. Once Cabrera is settled, he'll have more options. Most teams just haven't set an agenda yet. It's the same deal on Mo. There haven't been any offers there, and yet he has nothing to lose by waiting.

Though, I suspect in Mo's case there's more of a grudge he's playing out by making the Yankees wait.

I try not to infer things. Everything reported is that he wants a fourth year. That's the same as Lowell. And both are overpriced with or without it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Sox HAVE put a timetable on the offer and we jsut don't know it. Its not unreasonable for them to do so; if Mikey doesn't resign they need to explore other optiosn which could include a trade.

Well, Sam, they can explore the options yes, but they can';t pull the trigger until they know about Mikey, assuming he iis there preference. If they can't pull the trigger, then other people may pull it first on similar trades. Thus, in order to really move on stuff, they need Lowell's status to be settled

i reckon the sox will pull the trigger on the right trade if it comes along at this point. Im sure they would give Lowell one last shot if they have some thing in place but they arent gonna be held hostage by Lowell. I think they have made that much clear.

Not entirely on topic, but I just started a new book ("Fantasyland", about a group of 'bigwig' rotisserie players over the 2004 season), and this quote had me guffawing:
