You know you are an aging, un-range-y shortstop when you are replaced on the cover of a popular video game box by a cocky kid who led a team to ignominious, historic defeat.  Considering the constant din about how the Sox are now the darling team of America, we're outraged they didn't go with Julio Lugo!

It does always seem like this seems to happen at the worst possible moment in a player's career, doesn't it? (Or not, it's just that we notice when it does more so than when it doesn't matter.)

But the Mets' collapse aside, and Reyes', uhh, contributions to it, he's still a fantastic enough player to merit consideration as a "poster boy", as it were. I mean, a player's allowed to have a crappy two months, even if it coincides with both the worst possible time AND all of his teammates' crappy two months, right?... [sigh]

Reyes being the frontman makes me think...does anybody ever actually look at this guy's stats? He's a markedly inferior hitter to Pedroia, Cano, Jeter, Utley, Ramirez and Roberts and that's just a list of middle infielders off the top of my head.

What's so awesome about him again?

HD/NY - It's his smile, man! He leads the league in Smiles Over Replacement Player! Perhaps that's a dubious achievement, since replacement players don't have enough job security to smile, but still...

In all seriousness (if that's possible for me), I am a big Reyes/Wright fan, but I can admit that a lot of their popularity stems from NY bias and their charisma, neither of which scores many runs on the field. But Reyes did finish 3rd in Runs Created this year for MLB SSs, and 22nd overall, even with that Division Title-crushing slump. That ain't shabby.

Reyes has regressed as far as batting average goes, but he had 78 stolen bases in 2007. That's VERY good. Especially considering he had 119 runs scored. I would love to see him on the Sox.
