Joba took the first "L" of his career last night, a bitter pill in the form of a roped double from Carlos Quentin coming shortly after a questionable non-call on a 1-2 pitch, chased by a single from the number eight hitter Joe Crede who until then had been hitless in three at bats, twice striking out. It took Chamberlain 27 games spread over 33.3 regular season innings for it to happen for the first time and of course it's not the last time, but what a fun run. The Yankees had a great opportunity to provide pressure in the eighth but Posada failed to come through with two on, grounding into the 463 when brought in to pinch for righty Morgan Ensberg after the ChiSox brought out righty Bobby Jenks.
Pete says that Kyle Farnsworth hurt his elbow when he slipped stepping off the mound in the seventh. No word as to how serious. In the eighth, Joba called Joe G. and the umps out to the mound to discuss the landing area on the bump as well. Tyler Kepner has a brief post that talks about what a truly awful day Brian Bruney had. Someone will be coming up to join the relief squad, possibly Edwar Ramirez and/or Darrell Rasner. Looks like the windy, wet night did more than make for a late game. Regarding the weather, it may be more of the same as the Yankees face the Tribe at the Jake in a four-game set starting tonight as there are thunderstorms and 20 mph winds in the forecast. At least because of the way the rotation spins, the Yankees won't have to weather this guy.
Alex Rodriguez may return to action tonight. As to the cause of his injury, Alex said "I kind of felt it playing with my daughter two days ago, trying to get up from the floor." Ah, the pain of getting up off the floor. Been there, be back again.
update: Brian Bruney has a torn ligament bone fracture in his foot and is likely out for the season.

I feel bad for Bruney. I heard an interview with him a couple weeks ago and I was impressed. He was very honest about the fact that he looked at his career and had to admit that the things people to do maximize their potential and prolong their careers, he simply was not doing. Eating badly, staying up late, drinking, not working out, and that he basically hadn't had the right attitude or work ethic. He said he realized how priviligeded he was to be able to compete in the major leagues and was embarassed at how much he was throwing it away and that it was for all these reasons that he welcomed getting the letter from Girardi in the pre-season stressing how much they were all going to have to run and how he expected them to show up in shape. It all sounded pretty genuine - not contrived and with no arrogance. Hopefully he'll have only a brief stint on the DL. I like the guy.

No way! Is that for real??? I am really shocked. What was the diagnosis?? I thought the guy sprained his foot!?!

Bruney: that sucks. Sorry, guys.
Re: Joba, it's definitely weird/interesting when the apparently-bulletproof guy shows mortality. Like seeing Rivera or Papelbon blow their first save every year is always such a rude surprise. Still, I'm sure it's the first of not-very-many as a reliever. Dude can throw.
