The coinciding day off for both teams felt really, really weird. Like a forced 15 minute break at work, or like an intermission in a show that is really rocking. I know the boys need a break now and then; we all do. But I was primed for baseball last night, dagnabbit. Anyway, both clubs are back in action and first on tap is Boston heading to Camden Yards with Josh Beckett back on the mound against Daniel Cabrera and the Orioles, both of whom the Sox have yet to defeat this season.

Completely agree on simultaneous days off - shouldn't ever happen. I had my son's little league game as a stop gap but it's not the same, what with his own coach pitching to him and all.

My mlb.tv is blacked out because I live in Virginia... and the channel that the games are usually on (Comcast sports network) is showing bullriding instead! If Manny hits a homerun today (his 36th birthday, coincidentally) I'm going to be sad for missing it.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 07:20 PM
Sac bunts? Stolen bases? I like this small-ball team!
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 07:28 PM
Aaaaaaand Cora misses a bunt on a suicide-squeeze play. F*ck.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 07:28 PM
First the screwed-up squeeze play, and then Varitek throwing the ball into the outfield? Ugh.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 07:43 PM
Pedroia makes an error, but Beckett makes up for it by striking out the side.
And then the next inning he gives up a lead-off homer. Shit.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 08:16 PM
The Sox are one boring f**king team at the moment, somnambulent.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 08:45 PM
just a lousy effort so far, no other way to describe it.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 09:29 PM
It's like the Sox are also watching the Celtics game.
Posted by: stuck working | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 09:46 PM
Maybe they'll get something going here in the 9th, since it's half-time in the Celtics game. Not likely with 7-9 up, though.
Posted by: stuck working | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 09:52 PM
Oki gets six outs on 24 pitches. Nice.
Posted by: pale blue eyes | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 09:52 PM
I give Tek about 1-40 chance of getting a hit.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 09:56 PM
Why did I commit nearly three hours to something so unfun?
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 09:57 PM
what just happened? The umpire rung up Coco on strike two with a strikeout call, punched him out. Coco not happy, then Tito gets into it. All because the ump f*cked up.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:01 PM
with baily hitting, that makes lugo the defensive replacement. i don't get it.
Posted by: sf rod | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:03 PM
mlb gameday was REALLY confused there. The ump really counted wrong? Wtf?
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:14 PM
Freddie Bynum gets on base. Come on lil Manny, get the out.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:14 PM
Manny's throwing gas.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:20 PM
Goddamnit, you get ahead of him 1-2 and end up walking him. Grrrrrr we need Papelbon NOW.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:20 PM
Walk. Another fncking maddening game.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:20 PM
Okay you're up 0-2. PUT MELVIN MORA AWAY PLEASE.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:22 PM
whew
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:23 PM
Thank goodness Mora grounds out. Would have been very upset if Tito let Papelbon rot on the bench AGAIN in a tie-game in the 9th.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:24 PM
good approach at the plate in the 10th, guys. Pathetic. This team is barely watchable right now.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:29 PM
And our 1-2-3 hitters go down on 7 pitches. Definitely must be watching the Celtics game, which isn't going so well right now.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:29 PM
who throws the 10th?
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:30 PM
lopez.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:32 PM
hansen.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:37 PM
Oh seriously? We let Lopez give up a hit, then bring in HANSEN? Wtf?
Sigh. Im giving up on this game.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:38 PM
Hansen's throwing gas, too. But Markakakakakakakakaksk is in scoring position.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:40 PM
No reason to pitch Paps two nights in a -- oh, right, the Sox were off yesterday.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:41 PM
walking the lefty to pitch to the righty and put a force at every base.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:41 PM
Strikes please, Hansen.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:43 PM
Well, the Sox are on the road so he wants to have paps ready to get three outs once they get the lead.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:43 PM
Holy crap Hansen didn't crap the bed!
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:44 PM
K. got him.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:44 PM
97 on that last Hansen fastball.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:45 PM
Manny, Mikey, Yookie.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:45 PM
Yeah, I was actually fine with having MDC pitch the 9th, but a Lopez/Hansen 10th was dumb, even if it did work out.
Posted by: stuck working | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:46 PM
Paps hasn't pitched since Monday, SF.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:48 PM
Fuck. pop out.
Garnett, Rondo Brown w/ 4 fouls each in the 4th.
I hate the way the NBA is officiated.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:48 PM
Are you f*cking kidding me, Manny?!?!? I really feel like he's messing with us on purpose.
Posted by: stuck working | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:48 PM
I think Manny saw like six pitches cumulatively tonight.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:48 PM
This kid has five outs on 14 pitches.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:50 PM
Per Gordon Edes: "Have I mentioned the Sox have lost their last eight one-run games on the road? [...] Have I mentioned the Sox have scored in just 2 of their last 29 innings?"
About to make it 30.
Posted by: stuck working | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:50 PM
6 outs on 19 pitches.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:51 PM
Aaaaand our offense is done on 12 pitches.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:53 PM
C's outscore Det 10-2 5 mins through 4th, tied 70-70.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:53 PM
IBM:
Did you see the offensive foul call on Pierce in the third after he pump-faked and had a defender jump into him? It was absolutely inexplicable work from the referee.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:55 PM
Hansen still in? Looks like Tito doesn't think the Sox can win, either.
Posted by: stuck working | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:55 PM
At least Hansen is looking good.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:56 PM
Hansen breaking out the nasty slider.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:57 PM
wow, well done, Hansen.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:58 PM
SF, these refs are SO inconsistent. Rip Hamilton jumped into Pierce and PIERCE gets called for an offensive foul, when all he did was shoot a jump shot... which went in, too, so it would have been a 4-point play.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:58 PM
I didn't see it, SF. When I have paid attention, I've been appalled at the officiating in the NBA. It just completely discourages fundamental play.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:59 PM
Celts on a big run, up three now, four to play.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:00 PM
The worst thing about this officiating is that the refs are LOOKING for fouls, and calling them for stupid stuff. Just let them play the game! I can't stand baseball games that drag on because of too many fouls being called.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:01 PM
No traveling, that idiotic continuation rule,... most of the time when someone drives the lane and I hear a whistle, I'm left scratching my head at just what exactly the foul was.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:01 PM
Albers has retired all eight he's faced on 24 pitches. WTF is going on?
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:02 PM
Coco pops up on the first pitch. Albers is about to be done with his 3rd inning, and he's only thrown 25 pitches. Pathetic.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:02 PM
First HR of the season from Loogie?
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:02 PM
flip back to the Sox and there are already two down, LFRS at the plate. This game blows.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:02 PM
The blow a lot of no-calls. Seriously, I fucking hate this league.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:03 PM
Ath:
Coco popped up to the warning track, it was nearly gone.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:03 PM
I'll take a walk. Good AB loogie. ... Pitches 2 and 4 were almost exactly the same according to gameday, one was a strike and one was a ball.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:04 PM
Lugo drew a walk! Yeah!
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:04 PM
Lugo drew a walk! Yeah!
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:05 PM
Ahh, thanks for the info SF. Gameday sucks.
Ellsbury singles! Come on Pedroia!
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:06 PM
jacoby slots one through the 1/2 hole as LFRS is running. Mini 2 out rally here. Jacoby takes second.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:06 PM
OK, OK, OK, let's go, Pedro. ... Why steal, there?
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:07 PM
Dustin rips one about a foot foul down the line. Tough break, missed hitting the bag by mere inches.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:08 PM
Dustin taps to third. Will this team ever score?
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:09 PM
Jesus, Pedro is struggling.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:10 PM
Pedroia grounds out, but Gameday flashes "ERROR" on the screen. What happened?
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:10 PM
Celts up six with 1:35 to go, Detroit with the ball.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:10 PM
Timlin? Gameday says Timlin?
Posted by: z118 | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:11 PM
At least one Boston team isn't sucking too much.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:12 PM
wait, seriously, TIMLIN?!
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:12 PM
Timlin in. Game's pretty much over.
*go-go-gadget REVERSE JYNX!*
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:13 PM
Celts up 6, with the ball, 36.6 to play.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:14 PM
It's a good thing we got 2 innings out of Okajima, or Timlin would have come in an inning ago and screwed it all up then.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:14 PM
and KG misses two free throws. Unclutch.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:14 PM
C's on the brink.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:15 PM
How about that. A strikeout.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:15 PM
Markakis doubles. PLEASE IBB Huff here.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:16 PM
Ground-out, and then IBB to Luke Scott. Pressure's on now.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:20 PM
Cs win.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:20 PM
Celts Lakers redux.
Third Boston team in a championship game/series in the past year. Not a bad run.
Oh, and can we just dfa LFRS?
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:21 PM
whither Paps?
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:22 PM
F7. I'm too old for this.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:22 PM
I don't know how we haven't lost this game yet.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:22 PM
Who's gonna accuse the Cs of cheating?
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:23 PM
Just a matter of time, Ath. Don't you worry.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:28 PM
Wow, Manny actually sees two pitches, though he hacked at the first and missed.
Two down. Why am I still watching...
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:32 PM
Baltimore has more Es than RS have runs.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:32 PM
Too quick there, SF. We take the lead!!!
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:33 PM
Lowell!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: pale blue eyes | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:33 PM
HEY WE SCORED A RUN! It took an Oriole error, but still!
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:33 PM
So that ought to explain where my brain is: I mistook a replay for Manny out. Manny actually doubled. Mike follows with a single and the Sox lead.
Posted by: SF | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:34 PM
Manny reached on an E5, SF.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:35 PM
