Josh Beckett Fighting for His Job: Sox-O's Gamer I
A few weeks ago, after a couple rocky starts by Jon Lester, the media howling in Boston was that he was all but losing his job to Bartolo Colon. A couple good starts later, and that talk has vanished.
No surprise, then, to see the references cropping up today after a second poor start from Clay Buchholz.
Buchholz, who threw only 37 fastballs among his 90 pitches, would appear to be fighting for his major league existence every time out because of Colon's presence ...
Extending this meme, I can only conclude that if Josh Beckett struggles in Baltimore tonight, he'd better start looking over his shoulder. A former Cy Young winner is pitching mighty well in Pawtucket.

Too true. Did everyone not understand that (like the Yankees rotation) there were most certainly going to be growing pains? It's just part of being a team with young talent (especially pitching talent).
I think you've had a remarkably good set of game thread intros this season, Paul, and this one has just raised your batting average a few more points.

Is Wakefield part of that group? Not saying he should be replaced with Colon, but if people are prone to getting bent out of shape, Tim is prone to giving them an excuse to every third start or so.
The idea that someone has to be replaced is silly. The upcoming 13-game in a row stretch will likely give a chance to test-drive Colon in the near future. And I've done a little research; I couldn't find a single instance of a team failing because it had too many options at the starting pitcher position.

What's amazing is that for all the talk about how Wakefield is either great or terrible, that was his shortest outing in more than five years, whereas the terrific start beforehand was the sixth such start since last year.

Even Colon could have gotten at least one run home with the bases loaded and no out.
What an awful game all the way around.
Though the Sox do have two on and one out in the eighth. Rally cap time!
