Better Than Nothing: Yanks-Bucs Gamer III
A make-up game against the Pirates is on tap, with Mike Mussina looking to join Paul Saunders as the only 12-game winners in the league. Paul Maholm gets the ball for Pittsburgh.

Feels like this is going to be a letdown game. I hope I'm wrong.
Fucking Pirates. It should have been a day game on the getaway day.

Ah, so Moose goes again. Though this time without the 3 run lead..
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 06:50 PM
And still without the lead..
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 07:26 PM
Christian ends the inning, so Moose will lead off next inning.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 07:28 PM
Wow, the Pirates have their pitcher hitting 8th.
Posted by: Atheose | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 07:40 PM
Hrmm, didn't notice that. Am not paying _too_ much attention, trying to finish some work.
Abreu draws a walk and here's ARod.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 07:47 PM
Wow, ARod took a huge swing, but a little bit late and missed.
Maholm at 39 pitches at 2+ change. Moose at 28 through 2.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 07:48 PM
The pitcher hitting 8th! Are they the only team to do that?
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 07:48 PM
Abreu stole *easily* on the 1-2 pitch that was way inside, no throw, and a base hit away from a lead.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 07:48 PM
ARod smacks it, but left it up a little bit, and McLouth ran it down in center, just in front of the warning track.
rbf - maybe this year. I remember in the McGwire HR breaking years, the pitcher would bat eight, because McGwire was batting 3rd. You have to ask LaRussa on that one. Though my memory could also be faulty..
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 07:49 PM
The 9th hitter, Wilson smacks a double the other way for a lead off double.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 07:51 PM
McLouth got the job done, a weak ground to Posada, who's playing first, moving Wilson to third with 1 out.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 07:53 PM
Sanchez singles *just* over the leaping Jeter and Wilson will come in to put Pittsburgh up by one.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 07:55 PM
Doumit singles to Abreu, who tries to throw out Sanchez going to third. ARod alertly catches it and guns it to second for the tag on Doumit running on the throw. Two outs, men on third.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 07:59 PM
Moose already at 43 pitches. Throwing a lot of strikes, but not getting the job done.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 07:59 PM
Jason Bay strikes out to end the inning with one run scored. Actually not so bad, considering 1 ER in 3 IP is an ERA of 3. Still, Pittsburgh looks good today, but that out at second looks big right now.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 08:01 PM
After 3, Moose at 46, Maholm at 42 pitches.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 08:01 PM
Posada will try to provide some production at 1B as he leads off the inning.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 08:02 PM
And strikes out on a nasty changeup. 1 away on 4 pitches.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 08:03 PM
Alright, got to run, go Yankees!
Cano did ground out though.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 08:06 PM
I knew this game would be infuriating. It had all the makings. And Maholm only at 78 pitches through 6 IP.
Posted by: A YF | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 08:49 PM
They should leave Betemit in to pitch. At least this game would become interesting.
Posted by: A YF | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 09:01 PM
Talking to myself. What else is new? Heeeeellllllooooo....
SF, my friend, are you there?
Posted by: A YF | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 09:02 PM
And a rally! Two days in a row for Bobby?
Posted by: A YF | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 09:05 PM
He did it again! Bobby Abreu as sweet as candy! The motherfucker smacked that shit!
(Could Sterling drop some f-bombs everyone once in a while? maybe call Waldman a dirty slut and a filthy whore? At least he'd become interesting...)
Posted by: A YF | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 09:08 PM
Damn. Well, hopefully that's it for Maholm. I like our chances with bullpens. Mmmmmm, Dan Giese...
Posted by: A YF | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 09:11 PM
Of course. Fuck.
That's it. I'm leaving now to stick my finger in an ice cone. Hopefully we don't find a little Paul at the bottom of the barrel.
Posted by: A YF | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 09:18 PM
Rays also losing. Would be quite nice for the Sox to gain a half-game on both sides tonight.
Posted by: Paul SF | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 09:19 PM
Indians now up 8-2 in the eighth on an E-3.

Posted by: Paul SF | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 09:26 PM
10-2 Cleveland now, so that game's all but over. Sox likely to be 1.5 back...
Posted by: Paul SF | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 09:30 PM
Raise the jolly Roger? WTF does that mean? A good day for the Sox, as the Yanks fall 5 games back of them, and they pull 1.5 back of the Rays...
Posted by: Paul SF | Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 09:44 PM
i think that means "raise the pirate(s) flag".
the rays may have found their "turning point" for the season as well.

Bad thread title. Hindsight sez it shoulda been "worse than nothing."
Posted by: attackgerbil | Friday, July 11, 2008 at 03:08 AM
Tough game, if only because we want those runs back! Also, Maholm? Really?
By the way, it's Joe Saunders..
Posted by: Lar | Friday, July 11, 2008 at 09:16 AM
It's "Jolly Roger", if this clears up any confusion..
Posted by: Lar | Friday, July 11, 2008 at 09:20 AM
Can someone explain Sterling's 'Bobby Abreu as sweet as candy' thing? I don't get it.
Posted by: ponch - sf | Friday, July 11, 2008 at 10:49 AM
As others have said, the Jolly Roger is a flag traditionally flown on pirate ships, often a skull and crossbones.
That "sweet as candy" remark though, I have no effing idea. It kinda scares me, really.

His nickname is "El Comedulce"

That's what he's referring to.
