Conventional wisdom tells us that a Clay Buchholz (near 6 ERA) - Felix Hernandez (sideways cap and MEAN stuff, polished already) in Safeco is as close to a guaranteed loss as one can imagine for our boys. But games are, as they say, played on the field and not in the highly negative mind of overworked keyboard tappers. So to that end, the Sox will take the field today, they will try to win, and they may, in fact, emerge victorious. But we will most definitely not be betting.
Discuss the getaway game here.

Wow, I went to err, use the bathroom and came back to see a tie.

Reed singles. Pull him, send Masterson out there.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:39 PM
*walks back into the hurricane*
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:40 PM
Well, no win for Buchholz. Totally not his fault. He should be walking off the mound with a semicomfortable lead and in line for a win. I hate this team so much right now. Hate hate hate hate hate this team.
Posted by: Paul SF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:41 PM
sw: my bad if you don't like it, just thought it's amusing/cool (technology-wise). I would've done it for the Yanks game if I remembered about it - I came across it checking out the PPA stat for SF.
But probability are just that - sometimes it's going to turn up heads..
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:41 PM
If it helps the reverse jinx - as of right now Seattle has a 63% chance of winning.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:42 PM
Well here's the big first test for MAsterson. Can he get a DP with inherited runners?
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:42 PM
Yeah, I know, Lar. I'm not actually superstitious, but I had to blame someone, y'know?
Posted by: stuck working | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:42 PM
If anything, blame the guy who laughed at Vidro being the DH! ;P
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:43 PM
Masterson gets a K. Very nice!
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:43 PM
Wow, Masterson comes on and Ks Johjima and LaHair on a total of seven pitches. Niiiiice.
Posted by: Paul SF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:44 PM
Atheose, you can come back in but don't get comfortable.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:45 PM
Interesting, Putz comes in the 7th inning, in a relatively high leverage situation..
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:46 PM
How the mighty have fallen: J.J. Putz on in the seventh? Wow.
Posted by: Paul SF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:46 PM
Masterson gets 2 K's on 7 pitches! Fantastic!
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:46 PM
I'll watch the game while standing, RBF.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:47 PM
Pedroia! Okay, I officially declare myself full of good luck now.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:48 PM
Elf!!! I love that little guy!
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:48 PM
OOOf. What the hell happened to Putz?
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:49 PM
Pedroia is ridiculously hot.
He seems to be hitting the ball well, too.
Posted by: Paul SF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:49 PM
So you have to send Masterson back out for the 7th right? Then Delcarmen/Papelbon (assuming we get the lead), or Okajima/Papelbon?
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:50 PM
That is an.. interesting statement.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:50 PM
Tons of injuries and sucked when he's not.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:51 PM
Atheose??
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:53 PM
Youk K's and Pedroia is thrown out. I hate the hit-and-run.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:53 PM
Struck them out/throw them out DP. I wonder what's the leash on Putz. I guess this was his inning.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:53 PM
We will lose this game. We will have 13 baserunners in the first seven innings, score only three of them, score only one run despite loading the bases with none out, squander a decent outing from Clay Buchholz, and lose this effing game.
Posted by: Paul SF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:54 PM
Atheose??
*hides under desk*
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:55 PM
I heart Masterson's slider.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:56 PM
You know, when that class was canceled, perhaps you should have considered going to the library to do some make-up work.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:57 PM
With Masterson's arm, we could leave him out there for three or four innings if this game stays tied. Right now, knock on wood, Masterson looks good enough where that may be the case.
Posted by: Paul SF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:59 PM
Ellsbury with a great catch that Manny wouldn't have had. Masterson with a perfect 1.2 IP, and only 17 pitches used. Send him out for the 8th? Or do we trust Oki/Delcarmen?
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:59 PM
Well, I'm outta here! Can't blame the rest of the game on me!
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:59 PM
Masterson for the 8th, right? Anyone?
Anyone?
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:59 PM
Adios, Lar.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:59 PM
You have to send him back out there. That's why Theo did this. This shores up the big hole.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:00 PM
Yeah, Bill, especially in the tie game. He has to go out for the eighth, especially seeing as he's only thrown one inning's worth of pitches.
Posted by: Paul SF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:01 PM
That catch is the only downside of seeing Big Papi back in the line-up.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:01 PM
I'm sorry RBF! Though I still think Lar's jinxes deserve a larger portion of the blame.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:02 PM
It's Manny injury allowing Ellsbury to be in left, so you'd probably still get to see that catch if Papi were in today's lineup, RBF.
I wish Papi were in today's lineup. I bet we might have more than three runs right now.
Posted by: Paul SF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:03 PM
Is that a "Let's go Yankees" cheer in the crowd? Wtf?
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:04 PM
Tito listening to this thread apparently. Masterson back out there, gets a groundout on his slider.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:08 PM
Yep. This Masterson in long relief thing is a bad idea alright.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:10 PM
Write it down: Masterson's arrival to the bullpen will save the Red Sox' season.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:12 PM
At least Tek can't gidp again
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:14 PM
That sounded a tad Keystone Cop-esque
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:14 PM
crap. Gotta hope for extra innings
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:17 PM
Ellsbury 0-5 tonight. Okajima in.
Posted by: | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:18 PM
Those were three bad at-bats there.
I'd love to know what was going through Tek's head after the latest k.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:19 PM
Tomorrow's an off day so at least a few extra innings won't affect anything.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:20 PM
Okajima is going to blow the game. I can feel it.
Haha shirtless fan on the field. I'm surprised the cameraman showed him being carried away--I thought networks weren't allowed to show ANY footage when fans go on the field.
Posted by: | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:22 PM
Ellsbury makes another great play.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:25 PM
Anon was me. Stupid typepad.
I've never been so nervous to see a reliever with a 2.72 ERA in the game.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:26 PM
if only his bat weren't stone cold...
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:27 PM
is anyone else breathing?
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:27 PM
4-pitch walk. Tito pulls him, Delcarmen in.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:28 PM
Delcarmen? Ugh.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:30 PM
I'm not, RBF. How the fuck do you walk Miguel "two-twenty-five" Cairo? He's hitting almost as bad as Tek!
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:30 PM
whew
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:33 PM
Delcarmen gets out of it! On to extras, Pedroia-Drew-Youk. Offense please?
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:34 PM
Come on Lawn Gnome!!
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:36 PM
Crap.
How do we get that Morrow guy?
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:37 PM
He certainly has some nasty stuff.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:38 PM
I want him.
RBF, talk to Theo.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:39 PM
I want him.
RBF, talk to Theo.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:39 PM
Drew draws his 2nd walk of the day. Drive him in Lowell!
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:39 PM
I'm on it.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:40 PM
Ichiro is off of Drew's holiday card list I would guess.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:41 PM
cripes
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:42 PM
JD will take care of that when he wakes up.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:42 PM
Drew doubled off first. Bah.
You know what the best thing about this extra-inning game is? It's not 2:00am right now! All left-coast games should be day games.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:42 PM
Ichiro is certainly crossed off mine. Profanity-laden pre-ASG rant or not.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:43 PM
Eh, replay shows JD not so much at fault.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:43 PM
You know, today was kind of a cleansing.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:44 PM
Delcarmen still in? Me still nauseous.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:44 PM
Heh, game's still going on...
Posted by: Paul SF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:44 PM
I want him.
RBF, talk to Theo.
Not to toot my own horn, but I said we should get Morrow back in June ;-)

Wicked curveball to K Lopez there.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:46 PM
MDC sez: Suck on that, YFSF doubters!
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:49 PM
Red Sox bullpen tonight: 4.2 IP, 5 K, 1 BB, 0 H.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:50 PM
Why can't Papsy pitch more than one inning, again?
Posted by: A YF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:55 PM
Lowrie draws a walk! Hey Varitek, please don't go 0-5.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:57 PM
Holy shit Varitek listened!
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:57 PM
That first pitch swing by Crisp looked a bit wanting.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:58 PM
Coco just wanted to hear me scream "GOD BLESS COCO!", ag.
Posted by: | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:58 PM
Paps may end up pitching several at the rate this is going.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:59 PM
well then maybe he should have hit it harder, Ath.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 07:59 PM
Papelbon in.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 08:00 PM
Wow what a lucky goddamn hit. Dejavu of a previous blown save this season.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 08:02 PM
Ouch.. that's a tough replay to live down at the end of the season blooper reel.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 08:02 PM
what happened?
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 08:03 PM
Vidro hit a silly dink that Paps over-ran because of a some english on it.. He tried to recover and toss to first but he couldn't get the handle on it and fell over rather clumsily.
Made Beltre look slow here with that K.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 08:05 PM
High-hopping ball towards the 1st baseline, Paps went after it but was running too fast--the ball had spin and bounced backwards away from him.
Betancourt singles to the gap, runner was going.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 08:07 PM
My heart just stopped on that foul ball. The announcer was screaming like it was easily fair.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 08:09 PM
Whew.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 08:10 PM
Lowell fields it easily and gets the double play. Thank goodness.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 08:10 PM
Ellsbury! About time!
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 08:13 PM
I swear to god if Ellsbury doesn't steal this base I'm going to be pissed.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 08:13 PM
If Ellsbury had stolen that base then Pedroia's grounder would have moved him to 3rd. Sigh.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 08:14 PM
IBB to Drew. Youk getting no respect!
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 08:15 PM
