Mike Mussina can tie Cliff Lee for the league-lead with 13 wins and the Yanks can win 10 straight home games for the first time since 1998 (they won a few games that year). But most importantly, the Yankees can extend a post-all-star-game mojo that has filtered through every part of the team - starting rotation, bullpen, and offense (let's not talk about the bottom third of the lineup) - before heading north to face-off against Boston.
Pitching for the Twinkies is southpaw Glen Perkins, who has won 5 straight decisions since the last game he lost on May 30 against...a Mike Mussina-led Yankee team. Hopefully the Yanks will stay focused on who is in front of them and not what awaits in Boston. Keep those bats warm fellas and let's all try to acknowledge roll-call in between plays and not during them today!
Work productivity about to go in the toilet for the next 3-4 hours...comment away!!!!

Redmond grounds out, but does not move the runner over. So one out, Casilla at second, and here's Morneau.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:32 PM
Much as I would like to believe otherwise, I don't thin he's bad enough to lose this game. Now it's "must win" for the Sox in an hour.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:32 PM
Mo time yet? This guy is horrible.
Posted by: krueg | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:33 PM
Lar: sorry that I missed your clever Santana reference - I love it - as I love all things that bring misery to Mets fans.
On the issue SF addresses, I would say he and other moderators have been exceptionally patient with certain insulting posters. It's a pain in the butt to have incessant rule-violators ruining the experience for others here and if all efforts are made to address the situation fairly but are rebuffed/ignored by the person in question, you really have no choice.
1st and 3rd, one out. Let's go LaTroy.
Posted by: IronHorse (yf) | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:33 PM
K for LaTroy. Nice. One more out for Moose's lucky 13...
Posted by: IronHorse (yf) | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:34 PM
One more...we want the shutout!!!
Posted by: krueg | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:34 PM
Bye-bye shutout. 1st and 3rd. Girardi yanks Hawkins for Mo. Good move Joe. I know you want to build these guys' collective confidence but enough is enough. With the tying run still on deck Mo has a bit of breathing room still and will get the save if he converts.
Posted by: IronHorse (yf) | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:36 PM
Tell me they are booing the #@%& out of this piece of garbage???? Why is he still on the roster????
Posted by: krueg | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:36 PM
Morneau singles Casilla to third, Young strikes out, but Lamb singles to bring Casilla in.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:36 PM
Thank god...Mo time.
Posted by: krueg | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:36 PM
Ah, the good old one out "the tying run is on the on-deck circle" save opportunity.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:37 PM
In addition to echoing everything SF said, I would add that it is I who has been arguably the most vocal in internal discussion in encouraging more aggressive comment removal in keeping with the TOS due to recent comments that ranged far past decency and decorum, and this position has been met with unilateral agreement by the other authors.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:37 PM
Bruney may take his slot next week Krueg if he doesn't take Geise's. Robertson seems likely to stick for a while.
Posted by: IronHorse (yf) | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:37 PM
I second IH on the patience of the moderators here in regards to some recent posts. They've bent over backwards. I do not however agree with the "Let's go LaTroy" business.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:37 PM
I have to think that spot would be better served to a young guy or something? Hawkins has done nothing this year...waste of a roster spot IH.
Robertson has looked pretty good.
Posted by: krueg | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:39 PM
And Mo ends the game for a cheap save! 10 straight at home, and undefeated after the All-Star break. Go Yanks!
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:40 PM
AG, I doubt anyone will cry a river on this one - the complaints received on and offline on the comments by this poster from YF and SF alike faaaar outweigh any support for them.
And Mo seals it with a K. Grinning ear to ear.
On to Boston.
Posted by: IronHorse (yf) | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:40 PM
horse, it was the Kate Smith intro. Safe to assume that it was a tape?
Here's hoping Bob gets back soon.
and that was one tremendous start by Moose. (Dammit.)
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:40 PM
Mo with the cheap save. Yanks win 5-1.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:40 PM
A YF: i've defended you before man but you are so angry all the time. It seems you know quite a bit about baseball but in the immortal words of Edward. R. Murrow..."the message is the massage." Maybe take the high road sometimes instead of lowering yourself to the level of those you seem to let get under your skin?
(steps down off of soapbox)
Posted by: krueg | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:41 PM
Your problem is you people think we need to be friends to talk baseball. Sad really.
I've given as much respect as I've received - and to the particular authors most especially.
The loss of independent thought is sad for any community. It's your loss.
Posted by: Andy YF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:45 PM
I've given as much respect as I've received - and to the particular authors most especially.
The vast majority of the viewiers on this site, including the unanimity of the moderators, disagree.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:47 PM
Where did the Twins come from anyhow? Weren't they known as the team that couldn't hit earlier in the season? Ah well..
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:48 PM
Um, OK. Go find an online community that values independent thought over common courtesy and go post there. Y
Posted by: soxgirl | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:48 PM
Lar - The Twins, nothing. Where did these Yanks come from? I am still remembering (quite fondly) discussions from early June about whether they were ever going to break .500. Ah, the good old days.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:51 PM
since there's no sox gamer up yet - Manny out with sore right knee today. - or is it the case of King Felix itis?

"The vast majority of the viewiers on this site, including the unanimity of the moderators, disagree."
Not surprisingly, written by one of the original disrespectful FPTs.
Soxgirl - check the archives. My common courtesy far outlasted what I received simply by being a contrastive voice.
Posted by: Andy YF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:53 PM
Don't worry Lar, they've been swept by the Sox and Yanks in the last two weeks. They were lucky enough to get to play the Tigers and Rangers in between though.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:53 PM
There's a difference between independent thought and aggressive arrogance. A person can think independently and reflect those thoughts respectfully. It need not be done with such a nasty tone.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:53 PM
Atheose is disrespectful? Seriously? Cuz he called someone a village idiot in an early post today? Oh, sorry that was A.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:57 PM
RBF, obviously A is the victim here. He never did anything to provoke anybody. How dare you feel differently!
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:58 PM
Hey guys? There's a rookie pitching a perfect game into the 7th for Detroit. Something to watch until the Sox game starts.
Posted by: soxgirl | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 03:59 PM
And krueg, I'm really not angry. If anything, I'm happy as shit with this team.
But, yeah, I'm perturbed by the treatment I've received here. I got a ton of crap from other posters first, including disgusting ad hominem, and the moderators rarely said anything if at all.
Then some of the moderators jumped into the fray with their own disgusting behavior. And none of the other moderators called them out.
So yeah, I *eventually* responded to insults with insults. But if they had truly done as good a job of following their own TOS as when a mere mention of pot comes up, they'd have a better controlled dialogue.
Instead it's somehow my fault? Please.
Meanwhile, I've said many more good things about the Sox than I ever read from Paul, for instance, about the Yankees. I love to talk baseball. Sue me.

Yes, and while making an argument that would have had him barred from the high school debate team.

Maybe he doesn't like that GOD BLESS COCO thing you do. Whereas it tickles the hell out of me.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:00 PM

There's certainly irony in your complaints considering the above content.
Posted by: SF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:00 PM

"Hey guys? There's a rookie pitching a perfect game into the 7th for Detroit."
Gallaraga, or Galarraga or Gallaragga. Something that could bode well for NYY, because it's a pitcher Texas gave up on, not unlike one Sidney Ponson.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:02 PM
Dude, I just followed your lead.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:03 PM
And like I said, I never received any apology from you, SF. You have some nerve.
Posted by: Andy YF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:03 PM
I guess he doesn't RBF. I haven't done it lately, though that's Coco's fault and not mine. I sure as hell would like to cheer to his success more often.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:03 PM
not any more, he gave up a hit. An impressive performance nonetheless.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:04 PM
BOOO, DeJesus broke up the perfect game in the 7th.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:05 PM
So what, now I'm allowed to post again?
You guys really are a weird bunch...
Posted by: Andy YF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:05 PM
I have class for the next few hours, so I'll be missing the game. Root Bucky on for me, RBF.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:06 PM
A YF: I understand you feel attacked...many have but as mentioned by others your tone is so aggressive. I bet if you were just the bigger man and toned it down, all would be forgiven. I thought SF was pretty biased at first, but I realized my own biases were perhaps getting in the way of actual debate. That is all water under the bridge now. If you continue on your current path, no one here is going to want to talk with you about something you obviously are passionate about and that's baseball. You are going to do what you want but if you like posting here and being a part of the conversation, perhaps you can relent a bit to the general consensus of the community? I like posting with you and think with a clean slate (ala no more FLT comments) it would be all good...
Posted by: krueg | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:06 PM
A - Have you apologized to ANYBODY on this site? Yet you're demanding one from SF?
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:07 PM
Class Ath? What kind of fan are you? I am ignoring all attempts by my boss to make me get anything done so I can listen to the game.
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:09 PM
p.s. A- our conversation about something we both enjoy the other day that was deleted is understandable. Probably not the place for that conversation, you know?
Posted by: krueg | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:09 PM
Yeah A, I enjoy the majority of the baseball-related things you have to say... the problem is you qualify them all with aggressive personal attacks against the other commentors or the Sox FO, both unnecessarilly.
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:09 PM
Sorry RBF; I'll be ignoring my future in-laws on Friday for the Beckett-Chamberlain game though. That restores some of my perceived fanaticism.
Now I'm really out. Good luck Buchholz!
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:10 PM

(I'm joking. Really. Just joking.)
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:14 PM
"Have you apologized to ANYBODY on this site? Yet you're demanding one from SF?"
When appropriate, hell yeah I have. Just last week to Paul, in fact.
"Probably not the place for that conversation, you know?"
I could understand - but they allow disgusting ad hominem to stand - consistently. It's less the place for that and I've said so since I arrived and received that hate, including from some moderators. If they were going to delete mentions of pot, they could certainly delete the disgusting ad hominem. They didn't. Not once that I've seen.
Atheose - you have exactly zero moral high ground here.
Posted by: A YF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:15 PM

I don't understand. Why is it "disgusting" to allow posters to use words that sound like other words?
Posted by: SF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:17 PM
disgusting? From a guy who uses the nickname papsmear?
Posted by: soxgirl | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:21 PM
When have I ever used "papsmear", Soxgirl?
I've taken to calling him Papsy after the All-Star nonsense.

Look, if that's your standard for what qualifies as an "apology" then stop asking for mine, you've gotten it and you even had it within three hours of the original post in question over two months ago. You keep asking me for that apology for that ancient Ellsbury snark, but within that thread I was taken to task by my fellow commenters of both ilks, and I acknowledged, pretty clearly, the terribleness of my post.
Just for the record, from the archives:
I like using a story about someone being murdered in cold blood as a dig at a poster...clever, very clever.
Posted by:krueg | Monday, May 05, 2008 at 05:43 PM
It's a horrible story and in no way meant to characterize any one group of fans, I want to make that clear. But it was, as krueg says, a dig, I can't disavow that.
Posted by:SF | Monday, May 05, 2008 at 05:51 PM
I gotta agree with Krueg, SF. I love your humor and your posts, but using a horrific story like this for a personal dig or humor of any sort is pretty out of line.
Posted by:Dionysus | Monday, May 05, 2008 at 06:12 PM
Point taken.
Posted by:SF | Monday, May 05, 2008 at 06:25 PM
We should all stick to baseball and attendant issues, spiritedly amongst like-minded fans and yes, "friends" (in the loosest terms), which was the point of the founding of this site.
Posted by: SF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:30 PM
Here are a few appropriate cliches:
* Pick your battles
* Agree to disagree
Crap. I thought there were more.
OK, here's my point and then I'll stop because there no need to dogpile on the rabbit:
(And let me apologize in advance for sounding too much like Ward Cleaver.)
I come here for fun, to share my love of baseball with likeminded folks. And by "likeminded," I mean the baseball. Some like my favorite team, some are indifferent, some hate it.
But the real fun is the camaraderie. I don't come here to be right. I enjoy most everyone who comes in here. I'd love to have a few beers with these people. Just because I don't know any of them or have never met them or don't even know what they look like doesn't mean I think it's OK to be rude and disrespectful. The YFs are just as passionate about the Ys as I am about the RS.
We all come here with out own knowledge base, our own perspective and our own experiences, and I learn a lot from that and I enjoy it.
I don't have fun being mean and nasty. But I'm stubborn, too, and I'm not about to be driven away just because of a bad attitude. So I, like many people, am more inclined to lash back, despite the equally disrespectful tone.
Cleaver. Out.
I don't have fun
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:31 PM
Strike those final four words. Call it bad editing.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:34 PM
Sure, you acknowledged the disgusting nature, but you didn't offer me an apology.
It's like a murderer acknowledging the "terribleness" of their crime to the court, but no effort to remedy the situation to those who were "hurt" because you somehow think I deserved it.
Worse, for your case, I've never done anything even close to that level of appalling. And yet you're deleting *my* posts.
Posted by: A YF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:34 PM
A - June 26, 4:22. Thread about Dream Teams. That's when.

Bill - you have no moral high ground here. None. Ever.
Soxgirl - and the context was? Meanwhile, worse things have never been uttered about Yankees here? Look, I don't make a habit of that nonsense. And from the beginning I was given far more more of it than I returned. Don't gloss over that point.

I agree with Bill, it's fun to talk baseball here without the fighting and ignorance that both of our fanbases have in abudance. Not a cut on you A, just saying...
Posted by: krueg | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:45 PM
A- is it more important to feel right, or to be a part of this community that people want to talk to???
Posted by: krueg | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:47 PM
A - Sure when you do it, it's harmless. It's really everyone else who is inappropriate. I disagree. Your posts are the ones that I consistently find offensive and you get personal all the time with people. I don't post a lot, I mostly prefer to just see what other people are saying. Sure I follow Sox stuff more closely but really enjoy a few of the YFs (that's you AG). But your verbal abuse is consistent and off-putting.
Posted by: soxgirl | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:47 PM
How dare you compare me to a remorseless unapologetic murderer?! At best I am a remorseless, unapologetic jaywalker. And sometimes illegal car-parker. Once or twice I have been a remorseless, unapologetic "should have changed my kid's poopy diaper sooner-er", but we don't really need to go there.
I demand an apology, now!!
Posted by: SF | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 04:50 PM
Again, Soxgirl, point to where. Go back and read how I was received when I first arrived and for how long I resisted the urge to respond in kind.
"is it more important to feel right, or to be a part of this community that people want to talk to???"
Show me where I've treated SF as badly as he treated me with that particular post. I treat people as well as they treat me.

I've mentioned before about the Yanks playing .500 on the road. Apparently that's good for 4th best in MLB and 2nd in the AL. Now if they can beat people at home as consistent as they have, say, the last 6 games..
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 05:39 PM
I'd like to see that record about 5 games over .500 on the road come Monday morning.

3 games I meant...duh.

Wow, someone sure is self-conscious about "moral high ground."
Posted by: Atheose | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 06:01 PM
I never suggested that I have moral high ground over anyone.
I merely am pointing out that you make a war of every disagreement and you get nasty and even hostile about it, and that takes the fun out of posting here.
I recall the genesis of our tete a tete.
The topic was Schill and the HOF. I was pointing out what I believed would be the debate when Schill's name comes up for a vote - the pros and the cons. I wasn't defending Schill but framing what I believed would be the debate. You mocked my post by basically stating that you hate Schill and he doesn't belong in the HOF and anyone who thinks he belongs in the HOF is a "moron." You gave no merit to either side of the debate, and used the word "moronic" to describe it.
To this point I'd avoided the fray with you. But I'm not supposed to take offense at that? That's not personal?
That was the beginning of the war of words, ace. You started the hostility.
If you want to just spew bile on everyone you disagree with, fine. I just hope you've noticed that nobody is coming to your defense. You're on your own.
I'm not taking any moral high ground. If I crapped the bed, I'll accept responsibility for that. And there's no doubt that I've not missed many chances to chuck a grenade at you since. But what do you expect?
Sorry to be Ward Cleaver again. I'm just calling 'em as I see 'em.
