So what if it's raining: at least you can watch superfish go for more gold. Both games are delayed; if they get either in, here's a place to comment on the action for both contests, Blinky, Melky's demotion & Sexson's futility, or whatever floats your Friday boat.
Comment away..

Here's hoping Melky's demotion has a positive effect on both him and Robbie.

Are the Rays snakebit or what? Troy Percival likely out for the rest of the season with torn cartilage in his knee.

I love this pregame tidbit from the Globe's blog:
Two Red Sox players -- [Daisuke Matsuzaka and Mike Timlin] -- are standing on the edge of the right field grass, next to Pesky's Pole, shooting arrows into a target about 75 feet away. Neither has missed the target through one round of shots.

Aaaaand another member of my fantasy team bites the dust. Sigh. At least this one has some positive RL applications, unlike the random and devastating loss of Carlos Lee. (For whom I had traded Manny about a month ago. Karma much?)

Sox game postponed.
Posted by: SF | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 08:48 PM
Rained out! For the first time all year, I think.
Posted by: Devine | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 08:48 PM
I knew Timlin (and Wakefield) was a hunter-type, but didn't know about Daisuke. I would love to watch that!
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 08:48 PM
http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/schedule/sortable.jsp?c_id=bos shows one earlier rainout this year, May 16 against the Brewers. That was made up the following day as a doubleheader.
Wonder why they're postponing today's game all the way to September 13, instead of to tomorrow?
Posted by: Ron Newman | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 08:59 PM
i'm ok with a rainout. keeps me from reading the game thread. you east coasters have been ruining my olympic suspense for a week now with your damn time difference.

Michael Kay is an idiot. "Great baserunning by German!" he screams as the German hits the bag at third, and yet he's thrown out by five steps. A bad throw might have had him.
Awful announcing.
Posted by: SF | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 09:27 PM
Ugggh.
Kay: "It makes it a lot easier to win a series when you win the first game of the series".
Mute button now hit.
Posted by: SF | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 09:37 PM
Kay: "It makes it a lot easier to win a series when you win the first game of the series". That's really funny. Flip it: it makes it a lot easier to not have shit on your shoes when you don't get shit on your shoes.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 09:39 PM
The follow up sentence was worse, Gerb, but I didn't have the stomach to type it. He proceed to explain why. As in "if you win the first game, all you have to do is split the next two...".
Seriously, how much does he get paid for that job?
Posted by: SF | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 09:41 PM
That sounds like the sort of stuff they'd make fun of on FJM.
Phelps unbelievable, beats Cavic by 1 one-hundredth of a second. Incredible, considering he was losing the entire match.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:12 PM
Wow, that Phelps win was UNBELIEVABLE.
Posted by: SF | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:14 PM
Oh my, replays show Cavic's fingers touch before Phelps. Interesting.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:15 PM
Did the replays show that, Ath? I thought it was impossible to determine, there just isn't enough detail at the wall at the right frame rate to reach that conclusion. It certainly looked like Cavic had it won, even as he came to the wall, but he glided in and Phelps' last stroke did it. Amazing race, regardless.
Did you see a replay that showed Cavic clearly touching first?
Posted by: SF | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:18 PM
phelps has one heck of a wing-span...
"...Cavic's fingers touch before Phelps..." looked that way to me too ath...
0 for 9 with runners in scoring position...the yanks offense is downright offensive...meche doing his dice-k impression...
make that 1 for 9...thank you capt. intangible
Posted by: dc | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:21 PM
The first replay I saw from above made it look like Cavic CLEARLY touched first. Then they showed it again in slow-motion, and you're right it looks too close to call. Incredible.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:21 PM
Ath: I slowed down the NBC super slo-mo from under the water, and it's just impossible to tell. It looked like a tie, which it basically was.
Posted by: SF | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:22 PM
no offense sf, but guys who listen to or-silly-o and tom caron shouldn't throw stones at m-kay
Posted by: dc | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:22 PM
I just flipped back to the women's 800 freestyle and it looks like some woman is swimming alone. Nobody nearby, it seriously looks like an empty pool but for the leader.
Posted by: SF | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:23 PM
"..looked like a tie..."
yeah sf, i think they said 1/100 of a second...tough to see that differential with the naked eye...hope they got all that electronic stuff calibrated right...
Posted by: dc | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:24 PM
no offense sf, but guys who listen to or-silly-o and tom caron shouldn't throw stones at m-kay
Orsillo is kind of silly, but I haven't ever heard him explain why winning the first game of a series is a good thing, then follow up with an explanation why, dc.
Posted by: SF | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:25 PM
Really dc? Don Orsillo isn't bad at all, especially compared to soem of the others in the league.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:25 PM
Maybe Yogi told him to say it?
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:26 PM
Later, all, off to sleep.
Posted by: SF | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:26 PM
i wasn't defending kay sf, just pointing out that your guys grate on the nerves about as much...kay is annoying and becoming more and more a "mccarver-lite" with his statements of the obvious...i think he just likes to talk and feels the need to fill dead air...that and his voice has no timbre...kind of like a squeaky violin...
Posted by: dc | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:39 PM
Cavic filing a formal protest of the finish.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:47 PM
saw the protest news too ath...that would stink to have the medal taken away...not sure what they can protest, as long as the finish line electronics are working right...maybe they think phelps had a false start...not like in baseball where an ump can blow a call...
Posted by: dc | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 10:50 PM
Wow, and Mo blows another tie-game.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 11:39 PM
Seriously. I mean, I want to like, just call it fluke, but.. how many times can it happen?
Of course, if he knows what's wrong, he would fix it.. so..
Posted by: Lar | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 11:51 PM
Soria doing his best to give the game back. ARod up with the tying run in scoring position.
Posted by: Atheose | Friday, August 15, 2008 at 11:55 PM
Giambi pops out with the bases loaded. Yanks now 7 back of the wildcard.
Posted by: Atheose | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 12:00 AM
I don't know how the Yanks don't win on that one. Some times you're just unlucky, I guess..
Posted by: Lar | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 12:02 AM
Christian getting picked off first really hurts there. If he had stolen 2nd successfully he would have moved to 3rd when Damon grounded out and scored when Jeter singled.
Posted by: Atheose | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 12:26 AM
The best part about being a YF is being taunted by Royal's fans...that's how pathetic we are now. I have to get out of this shithole. (shithole = memphis, tn)
Posted by: krueg | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 12:27 AM
Lar: unlucky = a bunch of overpaid, sorry-ass, pre-madonna, cocksucking losers.
Posted by: krueg | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 12:28 AM
Can someone...ANYONE...tell me why the fuck Girardi didn't have Brett "i hit .140 in the majors) Gardner BUNT in the beginning of the game with guys on first and second and no outs?????
Posted by: krueg | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 12:46 AM
luck has nothing to do with it when you aren't putting in the effort...
Posted by: dc | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 12:51 AM
krueg, i empathize with your frustration...i gave up on this team long ago...major re-org [that's what we used to call it where i worked] is coming [i hope] in the off-season...
Posted by: dc | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 12:53 AM
Mo being Mo?
