Rough night for the Yankees and their fans -- one f those one-run losses that sticks with you, even after you sleep in and realize there's a game going on early this afternoon. Somehow, the Royals now have a 5-3 series lead on the Yanks, so the Bronx Bombers turn to Sidney Ponson to at least make things respectable. He goes against Zack Grienke. It's scoreless heading into the second.
Comment away!

Never mind. 1-0 on Alex Gordon's home run.

Oooooof...Damon, Jeter, and Abreu single to load them. A-Rod K's, and Giambi GIDPs.

Bases loaded ZERO outs. Alex Rodriguez strikes out swinging and Jason Giambi, batting .067 this year with the bases loaded, grounds into an inning ending double play.
sigh...

I think A Rod needs to grow a stache and Giambi should frost his hair and wear lighter eye contacts.

wow...bases loaded...no outs...Alex Ks, Giambi GIDP....wow

Wow, the situational hitting by both teams in this game is inept.

I'd be listening to the game, but XM is doing a Mandatory Metallica channel today... Can't resist it (even though I could do the exact same thing by hitting "Shuffle" on my iTunes)...

Cano triples one in with 2 outs in the 7th.

Wild pitch scores the tying run.

Wheels off on Royals as error lets I-Rod aboard.

So here's the question... if the Yankees fail to score in the 8th, do you bring in Mo for the 9th? Despite all the tie-game blunders he's had this season?
Posted by: Atheose | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 03:47 PM
You a jinx-tempter, eh, Ath? (Not that I believe in them, myself.)
Loaded with 1 out in the 8th for the Yanks, tie game, and Nady K's followed by a flyout by Cano.
Posted by: Devine | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 04:06 PM
Ouch, bases loaded with one out and nobody scores. 12 stranded runners so far.
Edwar in for the 9th.
Posted by: Atheose | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 04:07 PM
And looks like they're bringing in Kevin Millar's favorite pitcher Edwar Ramirez for the 9th.

At this point I think I've counted the Yankees out, Devine. I know anything can happen (especially with Tampa Bay losing 3 crucial players in the last 48 hours) but I just don't see it.
Fantastic outing by Ponson; I don't know how he does it. His groundout to flyout ratio was only 9-8 today.

I-Rod HBP, Gardner needs to get a sac-bunt down.
Posted by: Atheose | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 04:22 PM
Are we trying to lose? I forget who we are anymore.

Varitek going through a rough divorce right now, apparently. No wonder he's done so poorly at the plate this year.
Posted by: Atheose | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 05:13 PM
what's Coco's excuse?
Posted by: SF | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 05:14 PM
...maybe he's the one sleeping with Varitek's wife? ;-)
Posted by: Atheose | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 05:29 PM
The Yankees cannot, will not try green eggs and ham (or score with a RISP and less than two outs).
Posted by: Paul SF | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 05:40 PM
Hey, the Yankees finally got a hit with RISP! A 3-hit night for Melky's replacement ends the game.
Posted by: Atheose | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 06:02 PM
Figures, it would be Gardner, who reaches base four times. Watch Gardner hit .600 the rest of the way to help the Yankees make a race of it, then return to hitting .125 for the rest of his career...

Are both teams going out for ice cream cones?
That game was like one involving two summer camp baseball teams. At an archery camp.
Posted by: SF | Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 06:29 PM
That's hilarious, SF. But I don't have the faintest idea what it means.

the game was inept, sw. like watching a battle between the last place teams in Little League. Ugly.

"...No wonder he's done so poorly at the plate this year...."
ath, come on, really, varitek has been terrible at the plate for a very long time now, his divorce sounds like a very convenient excuse to sweep things clean...no way...

Stat for the day: Yanks had to go 27 and 7 to start the current playoff run back in 1995.
