Seven innings, six strikeouts, one walk, and no runs. That was Mike Mussina's formula for subduing the hot-hitting Rangers in Texas last night. He's now 15-7, the record he took with him at the end of 1996, and if he remains healthy (lord help us if he doesn't) and gets a little help from the Bomber bats, he'll have a decent shot at reaching 20 wins for the first time in his career. He's been doing it with guile, and with some pretty nasty movement, and he's been doing it by not allowing free passes (just 20 so far this year) and by keeping the ball in the park (just 14 dingers in 140 innings). We'd be lost without the old man. We might be lost with the old man. Either way it's been a pleasure to watch him at work this season. Today, Ian Kennedy, the Yanks' Mini-Moose goes against the Halos. Hopefully he's been paying attention. Onward and upward!

Watching Mussina and Mariano pitch this year with Molina calling games and framing pitches has been an almost spiritual experience. Impeccable command and control, keeping batters totally off-balance in one case and simply overmatched in the other. It doesn't make up for being locked into 3rd place most of the year, but I have probably enjoyed watching the performances of those three battery-mates as much as anything else this year.

Sorry to post off-topic, but Manny's being investigated by the commish for tanking in his last days in a Red Sox uniform:

I'm looking into my crystal ball and I see IPK giving up 7 runs in 3.1 innings tonight...but ARod will go 4-5 with 2 HR's and 5 RBI's to lead the Yankees to a 9-7 victory with the bullpen shuting out the Halos the final 5+ innings...

I wonder if the Yanks are going to bring Moose back?
Will they see this year as the outlier and look at the past few years, or will they see this year as what Moose can give you now that he's accepted what he has to offer and uses it to his advantage?
I'd say bring him back unless he wants a two year or three year deal. Maybe one with incentives for a second based on performance.
Or, he goes to Philly. I guess if NY feels as if Pettittitte is coming back, and there is nothing to suggest that he doesn't want to, and they feel they have a chance to pull CC out of California, which I don't think will happen either, I'd say they offer Moose a year.

C.C., Wang, Joba, Hughes, Pettitte...with IPK, Brackman(?), Aceves (sp?)filling in for injuries. Moose is odd man out.
