Boy was that a 100% true statement last night. At the end of the season these players better not sit back and feel sorry for themselves and think about what could have been. Wakefield and the bullpen (sans Pap) gave them countless chances. Injuries, shhminjuries. When Jeff Bailey and Kevin Cash out clutch you it's time to let the water take you under.

Jeff Bailey was just named the IL most valuable player of the year. I mean, I know people, especially Yankee fans, like to shat on guys in the lineup who aren't HOF'ers, but the guy can rake, and has been all year. So what if he's not one of the ones who have been so overhyped they're now disappointing?

Actually...you know what, go ahead and forget Lopez. I know I often want to (though I admit not of late).

For all the yowls about the bullpen, we have three effective weapons this year (Lopez, Masterson, Oki) and one deadly one. That's really about as much as you can expect out of a bullpen (last year when just about everyone was great or lucky was really, really weird, a statistical outlier).

Fox sports is reporting that the Kotsay to Red Sox deal is done.

Why would NY let this happen? He's going to give Boston a much better OF bat then Coco/Ellsbury to deal with right now.

Kotsay is a nice pickup, but it seems to me the Sox need relief pitching far more than spare OFs/DHs/PHs. Not complaining, just prioritizing...

Kotsay isn't so much a spare OF if Drew is on the DL for longer than 15 days. The Sox might kind of need him right now. A good reliever would be nice too, but are there any available that actually are better than the ones the Sox have?

My bad, I thought they got him off waivers.

Right now, Kotsay is better than Coco/Ellsbury on any given night, so instead of having both of them inthe lineup, you only have one. Plus, I think JD is probably pretty hurt, so this is a good move.

The Red Sox bullpen is slowly starting to fall together. ERA's since July 1:

Timlin: 2.65 (17 IP)
Lopez: 3.93 (18.1)
Masterson: 1.85 (19)
Delcarmen: 4.71 (21)
Okajima: 2.04 (17.2)
Papelbon: 1.23 (22)

Delcarmen is the only one below average; Lopez is about normal, and the rest of the staff has been tremendous. The starters in the past few weeks have been horrible, and without such superb bullpen work we wouldn't be leading the WC.

Craig Hansen, he the former first-round pick of the Red Sox, got hammered last night in Pitt by Cubs. No outs, 4 ER, 1 H, 3 BB. ERA is more than 6.00 now. He got sent down to AAA today. Dude.

I'm puzzled by the Kotsay move. He's not enough of an upgrade (from Coco or Ellsbury or even the kids in the minors) to justify trading a 19 year old with outstanding numbers in low-A. Meanwhile, the bullpen is still the major flaw with this team.

Jef - Coco's been playing well of late, but he has looked lost at the plate. Kotsay is an insurance move, too. good defender, left handed bat. Actually, since the sox have so many people on the DL right now (and will through the 31st) - they could have much playoff roster flexibility (assuming they get that far, which could be a stretch)

Theo gave up too much for one month of insurance. Then again, they would have had Moss (who's better and younger than Kotsay) had they simply told Manny to shut up and play.

Jeff - Kotsay is an upgrade over Crisp with the bat. It will allow Crisp to platoon with Ellsbury. It's a good move. Players with good A ball numbers are a dime a dozen. They're good high schoolers at that level, and as noted, the bullpen has come around nicely in the past few weeks. Yeah, they've had their blowups, but what would you have suggested Theo do in the middle of August?
This is a good move, and when rosters expand, I'm sure the bullpen will get some rest.
Anything that keeps Coco out of the lineup is a good move for me. Especially at the tune of someone hitting .290 this year.

Jeff: the thing is, the Sox have something like seven or eight outfield prospects - most of whom are barely older than Sumoza - who are rated ahead of him. Also, Sumoza's been with the Sox organization for 4 years already, and he's still in A ball - he's going to end up with Rule 5 eligibility long before he gets anywhere near Major League ready.

Yeah, he's a nice-looking prospect in a lot of ways, but outfield is a position of organizational strength and Sumoza really isn't a key prospect in any way. If Kotsay can provide us a reasonable upgrade on Crisp's "offense" with Drew out, it's worth it.
