For the Yankees, the next few games may well be for all the marbles whereas the Sox have a little more wiggle room. The season series is tied at six games apiece, but personal bragging rights mean nothing compared to the difficult bid at making the playoffs. Tim Wakefield is on the mound for Boston. He has one loss and one no-decision on the season against the Yanks. It's Pettitte for the Bombers, who has split his two starts against the Sox.
Comment away.

Jeez, Oki loves his full counts. But he's got 2 outs and no baserunners thus far.

OKI! Its nice to have Oki back, huh?
Posted by: mattymatty | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:06 PM
I thought so.
Tor 6, TB 2, Final.
Here comes Paps to hear it from the mindless neanderthals.

Oh ho, Papelbon for 4 outs. Int'resting.
Posted by: Devine | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:07 PM
I hate these long games... always cause me to drink too much beer.
(Tonight's beer of choice: Dead Guy Ale.)
(Actually, I love long games. Baseball is the best.)

I'll stay for the last out of the 8th (coming quickly, I hope). Then I gotta head home.
Posted by: Devine | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:08 PM
I approve of this usage of Papelbon. This would be a huge win, let's not screw around.
Posted by: Micah-SF | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:08 PM
Francona is going for the win right now. I can't say I blame him. Though Oki looked just fine to me.
Posted by: mattymatty | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:08 PM
1 pitch, 1 out, inning over, shut up.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:09 PM
Oh, one pitch, one out. You're too kind, Papelbon. Good luck y'all. I hope 4 up (at least) and Papelbon will do the job.
Posted by: Devine | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:09 PM
Odd game. 9 LOBS for NYY, 11 for Bos.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:09 PM
Hells YEAH! PAPS does the job!
Me likee
Posted by: mattymatty | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:09 PM
One pitch quick enough for you, Devine? :)
Posted by: Micah-SF | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:10 PM
I'm about to pop my first Modelo, matty.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:10 PM
Covelli singles. He's -- can it be -- 3-for 5?
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:12 PM
Michael Kay: The Yankees have left 9 guys on base [completely neglects to mention the 11 guy the Sox have left].
I really hope the Yankee resign Abreu and stick him in right. He has the range of a dead donkey.
I hear some "let go red sox" at the toilet in the bronx.
Posted by: mattymatty | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:13 PM
I'm just finishing up my sixer of Dead Guy. Would that be Negro Modelo, Bill? I admit, I'm a fan.
Posted by: mattymatty | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:14 PM
And speaking of dead donkeys, who is this guy now pitching for the Yankees?
Posted by: mattymatty | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:15 PM
Base hit for Cash. First and second, with one down.
Posted by: mattymatty | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:18 PM
Man. Pedroia couldn't have hit it any better than that. Oh well.
Put 'em to sleep, Paps.
Posted by: mattymatty | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:22 PM
Nope, just regular Modelo. I do love the Negro, however.
E-5.
Lowrie = ARod tonight.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:26 PM
Hopefully Paps can keep it together. One error does not a four run rally make.
Posted by: mattymatty | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:27 PM
2 outs, ARod up.
The boo birds out.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:27 PM
Two down and A-hole coming up. And the fans are booing him. You stay classy, New York.
Posted by: mattymatty | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:28 PM
in the WC, CWS 8, Bal 3, F.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:28 PM
They're not booing, they're saying "You suck!"
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:29 PM
K-Rod!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:29 PM
A-Rod doesn't suck. But he does K.
Game over! Yankees lose! Thaa-aaa-aa Yankees Lose!
Posted by: mattymatty | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:30 PM
Great work. Have a good night, everyone!
Posted by: mattymatty | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:31 PM
Adios, amigos.
Posted by: I'mBillMcNeal | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:32 PM
Good times, guys, good times. Let's take Sir Sidney down tomorrow.
Posted by: Micah-SF | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:38 PM
Okay, now at least they won't *really* be back in the race after this series. Now tomorrow let's assure ourselves of gaining some ground on them.

IBM - Xavier, good ole A-10 school, Richmond here in VA is an A-10 school. U-Mass also, good B-Ball programs at Xavier.

See this is what I HATE about the save rules. 7-3 Paps up in the 9th and he get credit for a save.
Some year, some GM and Manager are going to make a decision that "closers" are overrated and make the call that the best pitcher in the bullpen will pitch the innings that are most critical. Up 1 run with 2 on and 1 out in the 7th, that's when the best pitcher in the pen will be in the game, not holding him for the 9th when a 4 run lead means a win 95+% of the time.
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 11:32 PM
Billsburg, are you from WIlliamsburg, VA? I used to live there.
Posted by: Atheose | Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 11:35 PM
what the hell are the sox doing signing mark kotsay? brian fuentes is about to clear waivers. screw having a fourth outfielder, we need help in the pen. if fuentes goes to the rays i'll get a kidney stone.

Papelbon came in with the tying run on deck in the eighth inning. I think that save is more deserved than if he came in up by three with no one on in the ninth. Bah, the saves rule is still pretty dumb.
Felt like a save to me, though. Paps gives up a home run there, the Sox may have the lead, but it would have gotten plenty scary.
Poor A-Rod. I almost felt sorry for him last night. But I didn't.
The Twins lost, so the Sox now have a 2.5-game lead in the WC while being only 3.5 back of the Rays. Nice night.
