Being a Red Sox fan all these years produces some weird sort of disease that cannot be cured just by winning a couple World Series.
How is it that I was more confident of a Red Sox series win after Game 1 than I am now? The Sox are obviously in the best possible position, with the best possible choice taking the mound. Yet I worry. I evision Josh Beckett failing miserably, then Jon Lester being outpitched, and suddenly we're heading back to California tied at two games apiece.
It's silly, I know, but as we've said before, a lifetime of woe doesn't simply go away. Here's to a quick, easy victory tonight, so we can start worrying about Tampa Bay.
Comment away!

Just a bit foul!

About two feet, that's the answer.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 09:47 PM
Billsburg, are you in Billsburg? I'm in Dumbo...
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 09:48 PM
Let's go Jason - full count.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 09:48 PM
Did Saunder and Napoli even realize Figgins was there?
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 09:49 PM
Bay walks, Saunders pulled. Anyone else think it's funny he didn't last as long as Beckett?
Come on Lowell, this is a good time for your first hit of the series.

Alright Mikey, be a good time to get your first PS hit.
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 09:53 PM
I have no idea why I keep double posting.
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 09:53 PM
That looked well off the plate, Lowell has a legitimate beef I think.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 09:56 PM
CRAP - Gotta protect the plate Lowell.
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 09:56 PM
OK, frosting a playboy bunny - something to add to the bucket list!
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 09:58 PM
Youk is the MAN!
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:01 PM
Jeez, nice play by Youk, a bit scary though.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:01 PM
He just saved injury to both he and Garrett
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:01 PM
Youk could have both badly jammed his foot AND gotten severely spiked. Luckily, not.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:01 PM
COVER FIRST YOU TURDS
Posted by: Brownie | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:02 PM
MDC being very careful with Vlad here...
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:04 PM
Delcarmen looks pretty good.
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:05 PM
is anybody worried about Pedroia not hitting?
Posted by: mike c | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:06 PM
Not particularly, MIke. Short sample against a good team. Shit happens.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:07 PM
Fine work from MDC right there. Let's get that lead!
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:08 PM
Yeah Billsburg, represent!
Great outing by Manny. What's next, Masterson-Oki-Paps? Or Lopez-Oki-Paps?
Posted by: Atheose | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:08 PM
NIce pitching from Arredondo, tough 3-2 pitch.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:10 PM
Ath - someone's gotta do it with you watching on the big screen..
I think MDC is back for another, he looked sharp, got to get the lead here.
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:10 PM
Ugh, Tek is up.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:10 PM
got to get the lead here.
That's what I originally thought, then I realized who was batting this inning.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:11 PM
SF - aren't you supposed to be enjoying your 40th party? Or is posting here your gift to yourself?
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:12 PM
well, that was quite the useless at-bat from Tek. Sometimes I think he should just come up in all his equipment, save himself the time of taking it on and off.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:12 PM
40th party was Friday night.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:13 PM
What the black hole otherwise known as the Sox 7-8-9?
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:13 PM
Good work from Arredondo, though it was the weakest part of the lineup. He did his job, for sure.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:14 PM
good evening guy's. hopefully tonite can be the nite.
Posted by: sf rod | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:15 PM
My 40th will be in June of 2010 so at least if the Sox suck in 2 years I won't be celebrating during the post season...
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:16 PM
ROD!
/channeling Cheers!
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:17 PM
MDC is on FIRE!
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:18 PM
So is Lowery the SS of the future or do they go after someone else?

At least Napoli can't jack another.
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:21 PM
Well Manny LOOKED good
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:22 PM
Buck "Hideki pitched in game 2, went 6 innings" he's an iron man!!!
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:25 PM
Oki - 2 pitches and out!
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:26 PM
Lead off walk - make 'em pay.
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:32 PM
Pedroia's got to get untracked.
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:35 PM
Another poor at-bat from Pedroia.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:35 PM
Pedroia needs to rub some Flomax on his bat, increase the flow.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:36 PM
Ellsbury needs to be more aggressive. Why the f*ck hasn't he stolen 2nd yet?
Posted by: Atheose | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:36 PM
Dunno, Ath, good question. He's been planted every time he's been on base. Is Napoli a solid defensive catcher?
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:38 PM
I remember the days when Darren Oliver coming into a game was a sure sign that things were already over. Now he's pitching high-lev late in a tight playoff game? Someone check hell for ice.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:39 PM
Gah, Papi watches a total floater.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:39 PM
Napoli has only caught 11 of 52 runners this year - Jacoby needs to be going NOW!
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:40 PM
Fuck.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:40 PM
What a terrible slide by Ellsbury, he was safe by a mile, no need to do what he did, why the short slide?
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:41 PM
BALLS!
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:41 PM
Horrible slide by Ellsbury. Had the throw beat by a mile.
Papi walks, time for some Youk magic.
Posted by: Atheose | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:42 PM
Papi walks. Here comes Scoscia again. I wonder if he can get to ten pitchers before the night is over?
I think Scoscia is amazingly overrated, for the record.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:42 PM
I'm on my second double Captain and Coke, may need a third.
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:43 PM
What do you mean by 10 pitchers, SF? And why do you think he's overrated?
I actually kind of like him, I think he's very levelheaded in crucial situations, kinda like Tito.
Posted by: Atheose | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:43 PM
ellsbury starts his slide a foot and a half away from the bag. he hits the bag hard everytime with his lead foot that he's gonna end up hurting himself. i've never seen the kid slide headfirst.
Posted by: sf rod | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:44 PM
Scoscia is very overrated. Seems to get it done in the season, though much of that is the other AL West teams, but in the post season he is not a good manager
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:44 PM
I'm on my second double Captain and Coke, may need a third.
I've been taking a shot of cheap Burnett's vodka per Sox strikeout, plus one per run scored. I'm teetering on buzzed/drunk.
Come on Youk!
Posted by: Atheose | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:44 PM
This is also looking like the bottom of the lineup(ish) in the eighth and ninth. Grrr.
Come on, Youk!!!
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:45 PM
Shit at-bat. This game is ticking me off. Lots of bad fundamental baseball by the Sox tonight, very frustrating.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:46 PM
It's not Soscia's fault his team sucks in the postseason. He usually does as good of a job as possible with his Angels.
Posted by: Atheose | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:47 PM
Oh, and great pitch there by Shields. Pedroia/Ortiz should bat in the 9th, so I feel pretty good right now. Oki in for the 8th, or Masterson?
Posted by: Atheose | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:48 PM
I find Scoscia self-important and an over-manager. I hate 32 pitching changes per game.
Basically any manager that I think could put on a "LaRussa" shirt and wouldn't look inappropriately dressed annoys me.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:49 PM
Phew.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:51 PM
Anyone know if Drew is available to pinch-hit?
Posted by: Brownie | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:52 PM
That's the same pitch that he rung up Lowell on and kept Pedroia in the box. Inconsistent.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:53 PM
Nice play by Youk/Oki
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:53 PM

Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:53 PM
Oki looks realllllllly good.
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:54 PM
So now the low strike is a ball???h
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:55 PM
Aw crap, Lowell can't dig out a liner from Teixeira, now Vlad coming to the plate. Does Oki stay in?
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:56 PM
That's a ball a healthy Lowell gets, I am pretty sure.
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:56 PM
Oki out, Masterson in. I think I'm officially drunk.
Please get this out Justin.
Posted by: Atheose | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:57 PM
The more I think about this game, the more I can't believe that the Sox are actually still in it (at least right at the moment they are...Vlad still hitting so that could change before this hits the interwebs).
Posted by: SF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 10:59 PM
Went for the third C&C Ath - pretty buzzed myself, and I've got a bunch of VPs coming in tomorrow for a presentation on my group.

Drew supposedly available if needed.
Sox have used as many pitchers as the Angels have. How is that overuse? I'm just looking at this series though, not the regular season.
In any case, Tito gets a lot of flak for not pulling pitchers sooner. So Scoscia might not be too bad.
Posted by: Atheose | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 11:00 PM
My laptop must be messed up, I keep double posting.
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 11:00 PM
MASTERSON!!!
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 11:01 PM
YES! Masterson K's Vlad, screams and pumps his fist. Love that enthusiasm.
At first I didn't like Tito's confidence in Masterson this series, but I'm liking it now. Get the lead please?
Posted by: Atheose | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 11:02 PM
Nice Billsburg, I've got an easy day at work tomorrow so I don't mind going in hungover. I'm a lowly lab technician so I don't have many presentations. I do own my own website design company though, so if anyone needs a website or knows anyone who does have them email spotswooddesign@gmail.com.
Sorry for the self promotion, but I couldn't help it. I heart vodka.
Posted by: Atheose | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 11:04 PM
Huge boost for Masterson's stock on the Sox. Getting the call in a position like that, against Vald, shows the level of confidence (and the sox future) Tito has in him.
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 11:05 PM
Ath - spend this afternoon debating between the C&C and a bottle of Finlanda I've got in the pantry myself, the Captain won!
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 11:07 PM
Shields looking really good. Great breaking balls there.
Tek-Crisp-Ellsbury for the 9th.
Posted by: Atheose | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 11:08 PM
What's Finlanda, Bill? Never heard of it. Sounds like vodka though.
I had Sam Adams Octoberfest for the first two games, cause it was lucky last year. Got lazy and bought a cheap bottle of Burnetts Cherry Vodka for this game though. If we lose tonight I'll be sure to get Octoberfest after work tomorrow.

Ah, Octoberfest, the best Sam's after Summer Ale.

Shattered bat, Lowery with the play.

Have fun!
Posted by: BillsBurgSF | Sunday, October 05, 2008 at 11:25 PM
The Red Sox must win this game.
There is empty beer box just begging to be worn in celebration.
