Confessions of a Tired Pragmatist

I didn't see it. I didn't see the comeback. I was asleep. I nodded off after a two run something or other off Jonathan Papelbon with no outs, the Rays still batting, and only nine outs to go and a seven run deficit. I didn't see it. I was, for a lack of a better story, tired.

Awoken by a ping on my cell phone and a message on the screen from a former employee who I knew was at the game, I instantly knew. The message said, simply, "oh my".

Oh my. Oh my indeed.

Same here. I was sent to bed, basically. My wife was sick of me screaming.
I wake up after midnight to a call by my mom. My mom!!!!! I couldn't believe it.

passed out in the 5th, awoken in the 7th by pocket vibrations, and now i'll be up all nite. truly a game for the ages.

Oh...my...God...that game ruled. Being on the west coast helps.

I was bitching to my girlfriend on the phone (she's on a business trip) about how the Sox were going to get eliminated and I was in a terrible mood. But of course I kept the game on in the background because, well, it can't be over until it's over. Even though it was effectively over.

And then it wasn't.

Good thing I live on the West Coast, or I'd have woken up the neighborhood.

I kept saying I was going to turn it off and then not being able to. (And yes, being on the West Coast was helpful). Just couldn't say no to the last few innings of baseball of the year. And oh, man, am I glad about that.

Read the game posts. You all know where I was and was I wasn't doing.
That was an all-timer.
Mercy.

rod - shouldn't it have read ...awoken in the 7th by pocket vibrations..."and the phone was on the coffee table;-)"

Agreed. I've been watching the games in the living room where the big TV is, except for the last few innings last night (cause the girlfriend was asleep in the other room). I showed up in the gamer around the 6th inning, when we were at our darkest.

I didn't post from the beginning of the game, came in about the 5th. I was unsure even after the 4 run 7th, but when Paps shut them down in the top of the 8th, I though could it be? Even my wife, ever the optimist when it comes to the Sox (she's only been a fan since the late 90s) was saying it was over. I think it was Micah that stated it in the gamer, even it they lose tomorrow night, at least they went down swinging.

I was following the comments, saw that only dc was posting. If they were going to lose I didn't want a yankee fan (no offense dc) to be some of the last posts of the season.

I missed it too. I (and the Baseball playoffs) have been rather rough on myself recently, what with all the going out to the bar, and I just didn't have it in me last night, so I went home. I didn't feel like listening to the radio, so I just unwound with some Battlestar and found out the news later on. Don't hate me?

Same here. Both me and the hubby. 7th inning down 7-0. Damn we shoulda known better. We're not new here!

Will NOT make that mistake again.

When Kazmir was removed I had a sneaking suspicion that the game wasn't over. Managers are good at wasting starters' efforts these days. Was Maddon listening to Ron Darling's broadcast? Then, when Tampa relievers started throwing BP fastballs (TV announcers even said they SHOULD do this)like it was a game in May and not treating it like a 1-0 October elimination game I thought the Sawx had a real shot. (The football analogy: does the "prevent defense" ever really work??) When TBS flashed a stat showing Big Papi was w/o a homer in 61 straight postseason ABs I felt like it was jinx central. 2004 all over again....remember how the Yanks had so many Bosox batters in big o-fers for the first 3-4 games????? At that point I had to stay up even though I bleed Yankees.

The question now is whether the Sawx have the pitching edge in this 2-game series since the D-Rays burned their ace early. Will Beckett really be bad again? Look how Crisp & Papelbon got motivated last night! That will carry over.
