October is a bittersweet time for baseball fans. A long and sometimess difficult season comes to an end with the excitement (and often disappointment) of the postseason. We hate to see it go, but to be free of our rooting obligations is also a kind of liberation. There's no greater consolation, whether your team's been eliminated from play or just taken one on the nose in a tough game, than the splendors of autumn, especially in the northeast. We've been travelling the byways of the Berkshires this holiday weekend, an area that straddles the rooting borders of the Yanks and Sox. Whatever our allegiances, we all share an extraordinary natural patrimony. And I swear, the last photo in this series was found as is.....

Speaking of portents, we took the kids to the Brookfield Zoo yesterday. They have an exhibit, Stingray Bay:

There were signs around the zoo advertising it that read Those Amazin' Rays. I took that as a very bad sign.

Because I was at the zoo, I didn't get a chance to post this yesterday. There was one good thing to come out of Saturday's game, it was the fact that the Red Sox did some damage to Tampa's bullpen. Both pitches 6+ innings, but Tampa's caughed up 3 runs to Boston's 1.
Most importantly, as Eck pointed out on the postgame show, was that Tampa closer Dan Wheeler threw 48 pitches over 3+ innings while paps threw 18 in 1+ innings.
Me thinks that will make a difference in games to come.

Whoever painted the "YF" graffitti should be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Great shots - the foliage still looks a little before peak, which means if I can get myself upstate soon I will be in for some serious beauty.

I grew up there... Where exactly is this? Richmond or Sheffield, maybe?
(There are many second-home-owners and retirees from NYC in the 'Shires, but it still isn't entirely safe to wear a Yankees cap.)

P.S. Most of the leaves, but not all, are already down on the New York State side of the border with the Berks. Leaf-peak was about 8 days ago in Columbia County.

impressive hudson; the apple pictures were indeed from richmond--hilltop orchards. the rest are from millerton (ny, yanks country) and lenox (ma, sox territory).
