Hardball

While traveling around the world of political blogs, as we are wont to do in these restless times, we stumbled upon a rather prepostorous claim by the familiarly named attorney John Dowd, a lawyer for the Republican candidate for President.  With a little intuition and a quick check on the interwebs, we confirmed that this is the same John Dowd who investigated Pete Rose at the behest of Bart Giamatti.

So what does this have to do with baseball today? Well, Dowd, in his recent (and some might say "revisionist") rant about the Keating Five, took an indirect swipe at another man who served at the pleasure of the Commish, when he called Howell Heflin, the former Senator from Alabama in charge of the Keating hearings, a "stooge".  And not just a "stooge", but a stooge of then Senate Majority leader (and current Red Sox limited partner and steroid "investigator") George Mitchell.   So much for that unspoken rule about independently appointed commissioner investigators sticking together...
