It's an ugly day. The Dow is under 10K after another big drop, and sports fans are seeing the collateral damage of the financial crisis in their morning papers. Or not seeing it. Last week, the NY Sun died an untimely death. The paper's neo-con editorial vision was not credible, but the local news, arts, and sports coverage (bolstered by Tim Marchman's excellent reporting and the commentary of BP writers like Jay Jaffe and Steven Goldman) were welcome contributions to the field. Today, the Times announced that you'll henceforth be able to track your dwindling portfolio in the same pages you read about Derek and Alex; the sports section is now to be collapsed into the back of the business pages on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, the paper notified reader's today, in order to cut costs. Buddy can you spare a dime?

Here in Boston, the Globe has been shedding and combining sections at an alarming rate over the past few months. Monday Sidekick is now combined with Living/Arts. Wednesday Living/Arts is now combined with Food. Thursday Calendar is now combined with Sidekick. Saturday Sidekick was abolished and folded into Living/Arts. Sunday Careers (mostly job classifieds) was combined with Business and Money. I'm probably forgetting a few more.

So, we can expect newspapers to condense down to single page pamphlets in the coming years. Don't think of it as downsizing, think of it as a return to our roots! If it was good enough for the Colonialists...

I think the problem isn't with the economy, but rather with the newspaper medium itself. The internet is making it harder and harder for them to get by. Granted the current economic conditions made things worse, but I think the lack of interest in the medium is the main problem.

My girlfriend is an editor and worked on a local magazine, and a few months ago it abruptly shut down. Everyone was shocked.
