Here's the text:

A major league baseball source has told The Washington Times' Thom Loverro that there will be an announcement today regarding the future of free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira.

While the source declined to discuss specifics, there are strong indications that the Red Sox will announce that they have landed the highly-coveted slugger, who has been courted this off-season by several major league clubs, including the Angels, Orioles and Nationals.

And the link.

Sorry, I'd be more on this, but I'm dealing with some pretty significant breaking news myself today.

Eh, if it's Washington good for them.

If it's Boston we have to endure the next three weeks of "he's just an average player" crap.

Wherever it is, they have done an EXCELLENT job of keeping the hush on it. With every reporter and beat guy on the planet watching seemingly one guy, they have hid their interests very well.

If it's NY, I envision a Hank interview tomorrow where he proudly exclaims "we're back on top biyotches"! Sadly, I'll agree with him.

Thanks, Paul.

One Nationals spokesman I just talked to said that, as far as he knows, the Nats have no plans for an announcement today regarding Teixeira.

Link.

The Borasbot (Heyman) is reporting that the Yanks are involved and that Tex is "seriously considering signing with New York." I'm really hoping this is just the usual Boras bullshit spin.

Apparently, Henry's missive on thursday isnt true. I guess the Red Sox are a player for tex...shocker of the week

You're going to listen to the Moonies?

just wanted to go on record before the teix signing....

i'm an sf who's opposed to signing teixeira. no doubt he's an excellent player with some great years ahead of him, but watching him in the playoffs last year was frustrating. he looked more interested in taking walks and extending AB's than putting the ball in play. i realize his playoff numbers (*sample size warning) look good, but his big hits were singles. it felt like mark was fine with leaving the onus on vlad to be productive. for my money, i'd rather have a guy willing to take things into his own hands.

Olney says the Yanks' interest is limited to making sure the Sox don't get Tex for something like $140m or if Boras wants to offer them a big discount, a la Beltran.

Not surprised that Heyman, who's been pimping the NY angle for Boras all week, is overstating their interest. Doesn't make me any less nervous though.

SF Rod - I thought I was the only one. I would much rather be fielding a healthy Lowell at 3rd and Youk at 1st. But I'd hate to see him playing for NY. I'm hoping the Nats get Tex.

Isnt that olney info from earlier today? The yankees could have easily had a change of heart and jumped into this fully by now

Now ESPN apparently reporting that Tex will sign with the Yanks.

Hell, I would MUCH rather the Sox extend some respect to Lowell and Youk, and not sign this guy. And I don't care if he goes to the Yanks either.

Apparently Tex will sign with the Yankees for 8/180 with a full no-trade clause, unless there's a huge last-minute reversal.

I honestly want to put my fist through a wall. I think this is a great move by the Yankees and I hate the fact that when it really comes down to it, we're just pretending that we're on the same playing field money-wise.

I don't care where he signs at this point, just sign! Holy cow this is such a drawn out process. While I really don't want him on the Sox, I won't be too upset if it happens. They would be tying up 20 million plus for 8 years in a 1Bman, which means less money they have for pitching. Even if he did sign with the Yankees I just don't see him being a 20 million dollar player to the Red Sox. Like I have said before salary is all relative to need, the Sox don't need a 20 million dollar 1Bman.

I think I win the mug.

Yay.

I can't believe we got Tex...unreal.

Hizzzah!!!!!
This is awesome!

I like Tex, I just don't like him 22.5 million dollars worth...Well I am happy for Nick, he will be ecstatic over this, good for Nick! Merry Christmas pal!

Heyman has a 8/180 million to the Yanks.

Deal done pending physical.

Good Job, NY.

This officially begins my boycott of baseball if true, since this team is now officially unbeatable.

Yeah! That's how we roll, biatches!!! He's a perfect hitter for Yankee Stadium! I'm having visions of Donnie Baseball!!!! Wooooooooo!

"Free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira has reached agreement with the New York Yankees on an eight-year contract worth more than $170 million, a source involved in the negotiations tells ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney" - which suggests the offer from Boston was less than what was rumored.

I am so damn proud of Theo for sticking to his guns. Like John said, we don't need no stinkin $20m 1st baseman.

Are you serious?>

How is this awesome? The Yankees spent almost a half of a billion dollars in two months to become competititve again, and you're happy about it?

Seriously?

this from MLB trade rumors...

"Aside from the Red Sox, the Brewers and Blue Jays also lose here. Their draft picks from the Yanks for C.C. Sabathia and A.J. Burnett are bumped to the second and third rounds, respectively."

i can't believe my eyes, ears, nose and throat!!!!!!!!!

didn't make sense for the sox anyway.

I have to say I really hope they lose some of the public funding for the stadium - getting all of that after spending almost half a billion dollars on three free agents seems almost criminal in this financial climate.

Man, I really didn't need this news today, I'm absolutely livid. I honestly think the Sox are going to end up as the third place team next year, unless all the cards break right in terms of health.

How awesome is Cashman's job?

Seriously..How freaking hard could it be to just outbid everyone in the entire league, sit back and write checks and hope for the best.
This is just silly, and even YF's know it.

This officially begins my boycott of baseball if true, since this team is now officially unbeatable.

Heh. Typical Sox fan self-loathing. Even after two more titles than the the Yanks the last 8 years. The inferiority complex will never die, will it? Heh.

Three points:
1. This late bid by NYY doens't surprise me at all.
2. I have believed all along that the pricetag on Tex was too high.
3. Here's what doesn't make sense from Boras perspective: With Tex signing with NYY, Boras has completely eliminated the best market for Manny.

Lastly, I'm listening to WEEI right now. Pete Shepherd is hosting. He's "just sick" about this news. It's absolutely hilarious listening to this yahoo bitch and moan about it now. For more than an hour he rambled on and on about how the NYY offer was just a Boras smokescreen to get more money from the Red Sox, that it wasn't serious. Now that it appears to have happened, he says, "I knew along the Yankees would swoop in at the last minute."
What a moron.

rbf- we are definitely in a small minority.

my yf buddy who lurks on this site called this past weekend to let me know what a dick i was for harping on CC's postseason follies. he said my posts were based on blinded hate for all things yankees. i had to forward him similar posts i made opposing the sox desire to trade for CC at the deadline last year. so i guess the whole "going on record with teixeira" is a preemptive measure to avoid being called a dick.

Another cool thing about this signing is what the hell does Manny do now? LOL

nah, they wouldn't. Would they?

Brad we went over this last week. I didn't want Tex, not because he isn't a good/great player, but because of the message it sends and what it does to the game. I am not going to get back into it, but just know that not all Yankees fans are psyched about this.

The best part of this signing is that he clearly chose the Yanks, given almost equal money. How soon before the Sox realize that demolishing their minor league park is required - not only to make more cash but also to attract the top talent?

Juan, you're off base there, asshole.

Stop being a dick, please.

This is just rediculous.

Could we get a ban on the troll? Not that it'll really last for long, but it's annoying.

I'm betting if the money was similar (it looks like the Yanks beat the Sox in that department too) it was the no-trade clause that did it, as that's something Boston almost certainly wouldn't have matched.

Listen let's all keep cool here please. Just be sensible in your posts and no personal attacks, we don't need this to escalate.

Brad:
JuAn is a "fAvorite" troller from lAst summer. Just a different hAndle.
He's just baiting.

I know, John..

I wasn't generalizing.

Top talent? Money attracts top talent, A. Not the stadium.
Spend more = get player. Don't dillusion yourself into any other explanation.

And I take back my cursing. Feel free to email me, Juan for a formal apology.

How awesome is Cashman's job?

Yeah, it must awesome to get ripped to shreds because they didn't trade for Santana then finished in 3rd place.

Too bad their plan worked to perfection. Now watch them drop Damon and Matsui in 2009, cut payroll, AND sign Holliday.

I know you weren't Brad.

If we ALL keep it to baseball, this will be a far more productive conversation.

Just be sensible in your posts and no personal attacks, we don't need this to escalate.

Seriously, because I rightly called Fenway for what it is? If given the choice between equal money, who wouldn't choose a brand spanking new stadium over a cramped one with rats everywhere.

The only option now is clearly building a new park in the 'burbs. The Pats did it and it worked great for them.

Well, at least now we can officially start the Cashman will be fired talk if this team can't get the World Series. Anything less than a World Series win this year, and years to come is a complete and disastrous failure.
Seriously if this team doesn't win 125 games, and the world series, it's the biggest failure in all of sports history ever.

Did I mention your name once JuAn? No, I was speaking to everyone here.

I knew you'd be psyched Nick, I am truly happy for you buddy. I know this is the signing you wanted. Sort of like how happy I was with CC.

"Well I am happy for Nick, he will be ecstatic over this, good for Nick! Merry Christmas pal!"

Thanks buddy! Now if I could only get my hearing back in my right ear. I have an ear infection--something I've never had, even when I was a child--and it's annoying.

this move was totally predictable. Seriously, easiest prediction I have made at this site in five years.

half a billion dollars.

Let that sink in.

HALF A BILLION on three players.

In one month.

Hey, I think Pete Abe eats some crow here if this is all true. This is one of the only times I've been annoyed at him for the tone he took with fans who thought it possible the Yanks could sign CC and Tex. I believe he called some of us users of Crack.

Did I mention your name once JuAn? No, I was speaking to everyone here.

Who said I was talking to you? I was responding to the guy who called me an a-hole. Of course, I accept his apology. It take a big man to so, and on an internet board. No harm - this is what fandom is all about. I don't take it personally.

"Seriously if this team doesn't win 125 games, and the world series, it's the biggest failure in all of sports history ever."

Pretty sure that goes to, say, Seattle this year. You do know that the payroll will likely end up at or around $210 million or so, right? Was it the biggest failure in all of sports history ever when they didn't make the World Series since 2004?

Brad, you sound like a little kid having a temper tantrum...

"Seriously if this team doesn't win 125 games, and the world series, it's the biggest failure in all of sports history ever"

Could you be more melodramatic?

I was thinking, ARod, CC, A.J. and Tex have no rings and they are going to be teammates for a long time, pretty good motivation for four great players one would think.

John, do you want to put up a post on this at the top? I just got home from work. I'll do it but I've been hogging the duties recently.

I agree, SF.

I could see it coming a mile away.

SF, I think I still have you beat on the prediction thread, but you were completely right (as was I!) about how much the Yanks would be willing to spend.

half a billion dollars.

You're off by $60 million or so. That's enough for three years of Holliday. But who's counting?

No, K.

If they don't win, it's a complete failure. There is no getting around that. At all. I'm not throwing anything or kind of tantrum. Don't get all uppidy now that it happened and everyone else thinks it's over the top.
It's too much, man. There is no way a team can compete with that kind of lunacy on any level. If you can't see it, I don't know what to tell you.
I am on record here as saying that I didn't want the sox to go that high, so while I'm not upset the Sox didn't get him, I am upset the Yanks did.
So yes, that much money on three guys better garnish some rings. And, a lot of them.

Oh sorry, A.

440million.

Didn't mean to cheat anyone there.

Cashman is the laughing stock of baseball right now.

Nick, YF has it up already. But thanks pal. I am trying to wrap presents and type at the same time anyway. Feel better Nick.

Yankees have swooped in and gotten him. WOW!!!

Sox have not done much this off season.

Wait, so Tex is great again, Juan?

Just a few days ago, and under a different name, you considered him to be average at best..

What was that comparison again?

Sooo... pissed... off...

/Cartman voice

Wish I was surprised.

If there's any consolation (and it's a mighty small one), it's that the Yankees have once again grabbed hold of their status as the most loathed franchise in baseball.

I think the Sox should counter by signing Manny.

I guess the league should just fold now, huh Brad?

Basically, the Yankees are screwed either way with your protectionist logic. Either win the world series, at which time you will scream that they bought it and it's tainted somehow or they fall short and it's the "biggest, most embarrassing, pathetic choke-job failure of all time!"

I've seen sour grapes before but man, but yours are almost raisins!

"Cashman is the laughing stock of baseball right now."

Not sure how this is true. Say what you want about spending the money but I dont think anybody thinks less of Cashman, he is just using the tools he has at his disposal the best he can.

Brad, you know how the Sox could have had Teixeira? By continuing to negotiate with Boras, and not letting the Yankees swoop in at the last second with a final bid comparable or a little higher than the Sox's.

Looks like that genius Henry maneuver doesn't look so genius now. The Sox could have had Teixeira, or at least could have made the Yankees pay more by continuing to negotiate up. Because they tried to be clever, they lost out on both fronts.

Brad, ignore. Thanks.

"...If it's Boston we have to endure the next three weeks of "he's just an average player" crap...."

or the "he's overpaid and the yanks are overspending" crap, brad...

"...to become competitive again..."

uh, when haven't they been 'competitive' brad?...in this century, or even the last 10 years or so of the last century?...

don't get me wrong, i have mixed emotions about this signing...i was actually surprised you guys were considering a long term big bucks contract...i'm concerned that tex is overrated, and partly a product of the hype machine, but no moreso that a certain pitcher who never pitched in the majors that a team spent a combined $100+m to talk to and sign...
