CC better have some 8-pitch innings in him this game.

Just the score you would expect from a Verlander-Sabathia duel: 0-0 in the 7th.

And f*ck me, right as I type that ARod homers.

Having Mo in the bullpen is like having an 8-inning game. That strikeout by Aceves felt like the save right there.

Of course, another run or two would be nice.

Just another perfect inning from Mo, who looks as good as ever, if not better. He's on pace to set career records in K/9 and BB/9. Jesus.

This is a fun statistic - Rivera's K/BB ratios from 2004 to 2009:

3.30
4.44
5.00
6.17
12.83
14.33

Okay I lied, his current 10.2 K/9 would only be second to his 10.9 set in his '96 campaign.

Great work, Andrew.

You weren't far off though - his best year as a closer.

I'd love to see him win a CY.

CC and A-Rod (not to mention Mo) play like they're supposed to and the Yanks win big one. A-Rod has had several key HR's in close and late games. Don't have the ability to check the stats right now but his HRs have not been cheapies this year. With the Sox facing Halladay in Toronto the Yanks have a real shot at closing to one but they need Joba to not suck.

Here you go (AVG OBP SLG):

Hi leverage: .269 .426 .654
Me leverage: .218 .390 .436
Lo leverage: .270 .400 .554

Late and close: .276 .500 .828
Tie: .263 .400 .614
1-run: .265 .433 .612
2-run: .267 .429 .593

His averages this year: .250 .403 .534

Looking at it again, can't believe Mo didn't win in 1996:

8-3, 5 saves, 107 IP, 2.09 ERA, 130 K, 34 BB, 0.994 WHIP

Voters just had no idea how to value that (239 ERA+). Instead, we have Pat Hentgen - CY Young immortal. Still, eliminate Hentgen and Pettitte wins.

great game, great stuff on the blog. sorry i missed it all.

i think we can expect a big 2nd half from cc. and alex. still, a dogfight in this division.

And I think your stats count the IBB's, so even more insane, haha..

Man, if anyone deserves a "lifetime achievement" Cy Young, it's Mo. Unfortunately, this year looks like it belongs to Zach Grienke. Maybe next year, all the starters in the AL will be mediocre.

Honestly, I'm not too sure about Grienke - he was awesome earlier on, but he'll have to repeat it again second half of the year to win it.

That said, I don't know if Mo is next on that list in any case..

It's going to be a 5 man race come September; Verlander, Greinke, Halladay, Hernandez, Beckett. In that order.

Jackson doesn't have the wins, but he's having an impressive season as well.
