Not Drowning, Waving: Mets-Yanks Gamer II

The Yankees have dropped seven of their last ten. It hurts to watch, but we will be watching anyway, especially with staff ace Chien-Ming on the mound. Howse about a win, fellas?

Let's Try That Again: Mets-Yanks Gamer I

Last night's rainout leaves us with two games for this series, and Rasner gets passed over for Pettitte while Santana is on the bump for the Mets. Enjoy the game, those of you that can watch.

Crosstown Traffic: Mets-Yanks Gamer I

Pete says that despite the rain, they are going to try and get the game in, but it is likely to be a delayed start. It's fitting that the first game of the subway rivalry will feature Johan Santana for the Mets, and perhaps equally fitting that call-up Darrell Rasner gets the rock for the Yanks. Here's hoping they get the game in tonight, and that the Yankee bats come up with something against arguably the best pitcher in the game over last six seasons, while Rasner shows he's the right choice for the rotation.

In Progress: Yanks-Rays Gamer VII

Shockingly, the Yanks are struggling against Scott Kazmir. He's pitching a no-hitter through three. It's not like I'm jinxing it or anything. But he is only six innings away from a no-hitter. The Yanks do not have a hit and it's the bottom of the third.

Comment here on the no-hitter.

Reason to Believe: Yanks-Rays Gamer VI

Honestly? I can't imagine a world in which the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (yeah, they'll always be the Devil Rays to me) win the AL East, or even come in second. If these things happen, then we have a lot more important things to worry about: the four horsemen, galloping zebras, blood spouting from tree tops (I'm going for my Revelations imagery here. I have not read it but I can imagine the Apocalypse). The Apocalypse (should it be capitalized?) also involves Toby Hall hoisting a championship trophy above his head at the Trop. What? Toby Hall doesn't play for the Devil Rays? But you're wrong. He'll always play for the Devil Rays in my world.

So it will again be a two-team race. The Yanks versus the Red Sox. And check this out. Remember the loss column? That's what you need to look at. The Yanks are only two games back in the loss column! That could increase after tonight, but maybe it won't. And what about that? That's pretty good! No?

Enjoy the game. Comment on all the action here.

Advance Scouting: Yanks-Rays Gamer VIII

Intrepid author Nick-YF is doing some homework, checking out senior circuit prospects as he heads to Shea tonight to ingest the Nats/Mets game. Or maybe he just wants to watch a winning New York baseball team in action. Traitor. In the mean time, the Yankees try to crawl back to .500 as they face the Rays at the Trop. Chien-Ming Wang goes for the Yankees, Edwin Jackson for the Sun Fish.

No Gimmie: Yanks-Rays Gamer VII

The Rays are playing really well right now. They are a good team, darned good, and though the Yankees lead the season series so far, it could be quite the test at the Trop for four games starting tonight. Andy Pettitte vs. Matt Garza. Lineups follow, comment away.

Rainy Day Game #39: Yanks-Tigers Gamer VI

The Yanks snapped their winless streak against Detroit yesterday. Darrell Rasner was competent, reminding the Captain of Jon Leiber. Speaking of Derek Jeter, he finally hit a homer, and has been rewarded today with the clean-up spot in the line-up. Signs point to this being a rain out, which is fine, as Ben at River Ave Blues points out. A cancellation today means we don't have to see Kei Igawa this week. He's praying for rain. Myself? I like our chances against Nate Robertson. Go Yanks!

Digging A Hole: Yanks-Tigers Gamer V

“I said this last week: I can’t wait till Sunday, till they’re gone. They’re going to unload on somebody, and I just hope it’s not us.” - Jim Leyland

Gosh I hope the "unloading" part is legit, but I don't know if I'm as confident as Leyland about what threat the Yankees truly pose right now when paired with the Yankee rotation as it stands. Speaking of unloading, last night Kei Igawa used a shovel in the shape of straight stuff (I want to use a different word than stuff) over the plate that the Tiger lineup had to work hard to miss to bury the Yankees just deeply enough that it made a late surge by the Bombers an exercise in frustration. That makes it all four contests dropped to the Tigers this year and three losses in the Yankees' last four games, who look to recent call-up Darrell Rasner to do his part in ending this ignominious streak while Detroit sends Jeremy Bonderman to the bump.

Saturday FOXball. Comment away.

Meek God (zilla): Yanks-Tigers Gamer IV

Matsui

Modest is a far more appropriate word, but it don't rhyme. Arguably the most valuable offensive player for the Bombers this year, the humble hitter pictured above is near the league lead in batting average and leads in on-base percentage; he has been up to something for 17 games now. Matsui takes that something-something and a .458/.480/.500 line over the last week into Comerica Park where his historical numbers certainly won't be confused with Ambrosia.

The Tigers send everyone's favorite one-time Yank — Kenny Rogers — to the craps rail to kick off the weekend set. The Gambler has been struggling this year though he was respectable in his last two outings, which include a six-inning, two run outing at the Stadium. The Yankees counter with their own long-odds gamble, Kei Igawa, who was 3-3 in seven starts, allowing 17 earned in 39.2 innings pitched while walking 12 and striking out 40 in between hanging out at the Scranton Job Fair. "I fell into the sand trap."

It's Mrs. Gerbil's day weekend, and my third-grade understanding of Hallmark tells me that moms are supposed to get exactly what they want all weekend long, which happens to be the last time the Bombers and Tigers see each other this season. I hate to disappoint that die-hard Cats fan but I hope she'll be satisfied by a box of Russell Stover's in lieu of a win or three.

Lineups to follow, comment away.
